Urban Elegance Revived: Three-Story Townhome Transformation in Urbana, MD

This transformative project, tailored to the desires of a distinguished homeowner, included the meticulous rejuvenation of three full bathrooms and one-half bathroom, with a special nod to the homeowner's preference for copper accents. The main bathroom underwent a lavish spa renovation, featuring marble floors, a curbless shower, and a freestanding soaking tub—a true sanctuary. The entire kitchen was revitalized, with existing cabinets repurposed, painted, and transformed into soft-close cabinets. Consistency reigned supreme as fixtures in the kitchen, all bathrooms, and doors were thoughtfully updated. The entire home received a fresh coat of paint, and shadow boxes added to the formal dining room brought a touch of architectural distinction. Exterior enhancements included railing replacements and a resurfaced deck, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor living. We replaced carpeting and introduced plantation shutters in key areas, enhancing both comfort and sophistication. Notably, structural repairs to the stairs were expertly handled, rendering them virtually unnoticeable. A project that marries modern functionality with timeless style, this townhome now stands as a testament to the art of transformative living.

The goal of this project, completed in collaboration with Julie Dunfee Designs, was to achieve a layout and contemporary feel more in tune with the client’s needs. The original bathroom was very traditional, and the layout consisted of two spaces – the vanity area and a large makeup dressing room area, the latter not being something the new homeowner felt they would use. So, we dove in and eliminated the divider wall making one large open space which now feels open, airy and bright. In addition to new vanity cabinets, a custom dresser was designed to provide additional storage for the homeowner. New herringbone white Thasos marble covers the entire floor and provides a sparkly backdrop for the dark gray cabinets and polished nickel accents. The existing tub and shower were re-purposed, and a new heated towel bar was added at the shower area. Unique lighting, mosaic tile at the tub area and lighted mirrors add the modern touches the homeowner was looking for. For example, in a narrow room a freestanding bathtub may not work, and a one-wall layout that lines up shower, toilet and vanity on the same wall will make sense in most cases. (It’s also the most budget-friendly option in terms of plumbing). Maybe separate rooms for toilet and shower make sense? Maybe you want to work with a window above a bathtub or in the shower. You may live in an old house where you can keep some of the original character of the home, or you may be working with a small apartment space. All these considerations are vital in deciding on which layout will work best for you. Have a look at some popular ideas to get started.

2 Consider How You Use Your Bathroom

Once you’ve gathered some inspiration, have a think about who is using the room, and how they will be using it. A single guy needs a lot less storage than a teenage girl, and a family bathroom may need to consider elderly family members. You may also want to accommodate a washer and dryer in the bathroom, since it’s where clothes are taken off frequently. Also consider safety and cleaning.
