Spacious, luxurious, and sleek are just a few of the words one could use to describe this La Jolla master bath. The sink on the large vanity is offset to provide extended counter space for the woman of the house to spread out cosmetics and hair products while using it and the three drawers below offer space to stash it all when she’s finished. Her walk-in closet is just a step away. The husband has his own vanity, sink and mirror tucked beside the shower, a change from the usual dual sink master bath set up. As befitting a master suite, there are both a large white oval soaking tub and a dual-head glass-enclosed shower with built in bench. The second shower head is hand held. Blue pearl granite is used for the countertops throughout, with a polished travertine tile used for the floor and upper shower walls. Contrasting with the high polish of the granite and travertine is the rough finish used for the tub and lower shower surround, with trim pieces etched in a Greek key design. Cabinets are finished in a dark grey antiqued finish but the large windows and skylights keep the feel light and bright.

Since this was an extensive addition to an existing Romanesque house it was critical that the new space flow into the existing plan and feel original to the house. We studied the period style and details of the house and selected forms, materials, and finishes that were contemporary yet derived from the colors and textures of the Romanesque period.

A gut of this bathroom's cultured marble interior rendered the great bones of the room. New limestone floor and counters added texture and warmth with a new limestone ledge behind the tub for bathing products and the wall mount faucet. A spa-like ambience with an ethnic vibe is evident with the smooth, modern tub and Moroccan fixture. At night it creates an exotic, intricate pattern on the plain envelope. This one-acre property now features a trio of homes on three lots where previously there was only a single home on one lot. Surrounded by other single family homes in a neighborhood where vacant parcels are virtually unheard of, this project created the rare opportunity of constructing not one, but two new homes. The owners purchased the property as a retirement investment with the goal of relocating from the East Coast to live in one of the new homes and sell the other two. The original home - designed by the distinguished architectural firm of Edwards & Plunkett in the 1930's - underwent a complete remodel both inside and out. While respecting the original architecture, this 2,089 sq. ft., two bedroom, two bath home features new interior and exterior finishes, reclaimed wood ceilings, custom light fixtures, stained glass windows, and a new three-car garage. The two new homes on the lot reflect the style of the original home, only grander. Neighborhood design standards required Spanish Colonial details – classic red tile roofs and stucco exteriors. Both new three-bedroom homes with additional study were designed with aging in place in mind and equipped with elevator systems, fireplaces, balconies, and other custom amenities including open beam ceilings, hand-painted tiles, and dark hardwood floors.
