These clients requested a first-floor makeover of their home involving an outdated sunroom and a new kitchen, as well as adding a pantry, locker area, and updating their laundry and powder bath. The new sunroom was rebuilt with a contemporary feel that blends perfectly with the home’s architecture. An abundance of natural light floods these spaces through the floor to ceiling windows and oversized skylights. An existing exterior kitchen wall was removed completely to open the space into a new modern kitchen, complete with custom white painted cabinetry with a walnut stained island. Just off the kitchen, a glass-front "lighted dish pantry" was incorporated into a hallway alcove. This space also has a large walk-in pantry that provides a space for the microwave and plenty of compartmentalized built-in storage. The back-hall area features white custom-built lockers for shoes and back packs, with stained a walnut bench. And to round out the renovation, the laundry and powder bath also received complete updates with custom built cabinetry and new countertops. The transformation is a stunning modern first floor renovation that is timeless in style and is a hub for this growing family to enjoy for years to come.

We gutted and renovated this entire modern Colonial home in Bala Cynwyd, PA. Introduced to the homeowners through the wife’s parents, we updated and expanded the home to create modern, clean spaces for the family. Highlights include converting the attic into completely new third floor bedrooms and a bathroom; a light and bright gray and white kitchen featuring a large island, white quartzite counters and Viking stove and range; a light and airy master bath with a walk-in shower and soaking tub; and a new exercise room in the basement. When all but the master suite was redesigned in a newly-purchased home, an opportunity arose for transformation. Lack of storage, low-height counters and an unnecessary closet space were all undesirable. Closing off the adjacent closet allowed for wider and taller vanities and a make-up station in the bathroom. Eliminating the tub, a shower sizable to wash large dogs is nestled by the windows offering ample light. The water-closet sits where the previous shower was, paired with French doors creating an airy feel while maintaining privacy. In the old closet, the previous opening to the master bath is closed off with new access from the hallway allowing for a new laundry space. The cabinetry layout ensures maximum storage. Utilizing the longest wall for equipment offered full surface space with short hanging above and a tower functions as designated tall hanging with the dog’s water bowl built-in below. A palette of warm silvers and blues compliment the bold patterns found in each of the spaces.

The utility is pacious, with a pull out laundry rack, washer, dryer, sink and toilet. Also we designed a special place for the dogs to lay under the built in cupboards.

MMI Design

These clients retained MMI to assist with a full renovation of the 1st floor following the Harvey Flood. With 4 feet of water in their home, we worked tirelessly to put the home back in working order. While Harvey served our city lemons, we took the opportunity to make lemonade. The kitchen was expanded to accommodate seating at the island and a butler's pantry. A lovely free-standing tub replaced the former Jacuzzi drop-in and the shower was enlarged to take advantage of the expansive master bathroom. Finally, the fireplace was extended to the two-story ceiling to accommodate the TV over the mantel. While we were able to salvage much of the existing slate flooring, the overall color scheme was updated to reflect current trends and a desire for a fresh look and feel. As with our other Harvey projects, our proudest moments were seeing the family move back in to their beautifully renovated home.

How do I add storage to my laundry?

A combination of storage solutions is key to running an efficient laundry. Include shelves above or beside the washing machine to store washing detergent, softener and other cleaning products; and laundry bins for dirty clothes. Consider a custom-built cupboard for an ironing board, so it can easily fold out when you need it, or mount the ironing board directly to the wall or on the back of a door. A retractable clothesline is a handy addition to dry delicate clothes, while a clothes hanger mounted to the wall is ideal for hanging freshly pressed shirts.

What else can I use my laundry for?

Multipurpose laundry rooms or utility rooms can help save valuable space in your home. The laundry sink can be used to bathe your furry friends; your laundry cupboard can store sports equipment, gardening tools and umbrellas; and a spare nook can be filled with a desk and chair to create an office space while you wait for your load to finish. If your laundry is at the front of the house, consider using it as a drop station for mail, mobile phones and keys. Include a bench seat or stool, wall-mounted hooks for bags and a coat stand and it can even be used as a place to get the kids organised before you walk out the front door.

How can I decorate my laundry?

Laundries are usually filled to the brim with appliances and storage, so take advantage of your walls when decorating and use cheery paint colours or wallpaper to make doing the chores more pleasant! Fun signs, posters, murals and wall decals will also add character to the space. Think of your storage as decor, too – look for bins and baskets with decorative touches, and use brightly-coloured or patterned hangers.
