The client wanted to update her tired, dated family room. They had grown accustomed to having reclining seats so one challenge was to create a new reclining sectional that looked fresh and contemporary. This one has three reclining seats plus convenient USB ports. The clients also wanted to be able to eat dinner in the room while watching TV but there was no room for a regular dining table so we designed a custom silver leaf bar table to sit behind the sectional with a custom 1 1/2" Thinkglass art glass top. New dark wood floors were installed and a custom wool and silk area rug was designed that ties all the pieces together. We designed a new coffered ceiling with lighting in each bay. And built out the fireplace with dimensional tile to the ceiling. The color scheme was kept intentionally monochromatic to show off the different textures with the only color being touches of blue in the pillows and accessories to pick up the art glass.

Updated this fireplace with added shiplap stained a natural finish to give it a more natural and earthy look. Added greenery to add life and color. Added a large hexagon mirror instead of a mantel piece to let the fireplace stand on it's own.

The 3 bathrooms in this 1970's house were in serious need of remodeling - as in gut and re-build - so the owners decided to have them all done at once and while at it, refinish the floors, refurnish the living room and furnish the new screen porch addition. As a designer in a seasonal resort area, I am accustomed to working with my customers long distance. Using (and e-mailing) computer drafted renderings, product layout pages very professional builders, suppliers and steady communication, my client and I moved flawlessly through the challenges all remodel projects present. My goal was to find fabrics and furnishings that reflected the home's original architectural Mid Century Modern integrity The house has very strong horizontal lines that I wanted to repeat in the furniture, bathroom fixtures, tile and light fixture selections. Families with movie buffs or gaming enthusiasts will also need cabinets that are capable of stowing and concealing small electronics like DVD players and game consoles. And, if someone is still studying in your home, an office desk with drawers or a file cabinet is a worthy investment that will encourage good work habits.

How can I decorate my midcentury rumpus room?

The family room is often tucked away from more formal areas, so use the opportunity to get creative with your furniture and decor. Key furniture items, such as your couch and entertainment unit, are best kept neutral, so they can outlast any interior updates, while armchairs, coffee tables and any storage solutions can be more offbeat. Add colourful accessories to brighten up the space, and remember you can always swap these out should you get sick of your colour scheme. Curtains, rugs, throws and pillows are an easy way to add colour, while mirrors, floor or table lamps and ceiling lights will help bounce light throughout the space. Wall-hung artwork is a temporary way to add style and character, or you could be brave and add a colourful accent wall instead. As the main living space in your home, your rumpus room should be welcoming and personality-filled, so be sure to decorate it with personal knickknacks and family photos, too.
