From a vast and uninteresting space, this garden was transformed into a vibrant heaven with several points of interest. The lawn was broken-up with a sunken seating area and raised flower beds. The curved lines and paving help to draw your eye around the area. The fencing, railway sleepers and a fresh planting scheme have created a bright and colourful environment. Liquidambar were planted around the perimeter for added privacy. The result is a modern garden which is both functional and stylish.

Nestled perfectly along a mountainside in the North Scottsdale Estancia Community, with views of Pinnacle Peak, and the Valley below, this landscape design honors the surrounding desert and the contemporary architecture of the home. A meandering driveway ascends the hillside to an auto court area where we placed mature cactus and yucca specimens. In the back, terracing was used to create interest and support from the intense hillside. We brought in mass boulders to retain the slope, while adding to the existing terrain. A succulent garden was placed in the terraced hillside using unique and rare species to enhance the surrounding native desert. A vertical fence of well casing rods was installed to preserve the view, while still securing the property. An infinity edge, glass tile pool is the perfect extension of the contemporary home. There are so many items needed for outdoor relaxing and entertaining, especially if you have a pool. Pool chemicals, towels, pool toys for the kids, candles, and trays all need to be kept somewhere, out of the way and out of sight when not in use, to ensure the preservation of your setting. This wicker ottoman is the perfect solution, thanks to both its large size and deep, rich hues of natural brown wicker. The wicker is carefully crafted to ensure even, straight sides and edges. Slight color variations of each strand of wicker range from dark khaki to light brown to darker brown. The random combination of these organic tones ensure that no two pieces are alike, and that this piece truly fits into a natural environment. This duplex has a very modern aesthetic with focuses on clean lines and metal accents. However, the front courtyard was undeveloped and uninviting. We worked with the client to tie the courtyard and the property together by adding clean, monochromatic details with a heavy focus on texture. The main goal of this project was to add a low-maintenance outdoor living space that was an extension of the home. The small space and harsh sun exposure limited the plant pallet, but we were able to use lush plant material to maximize the space. A monochromatic pallet makes for a perfect backdrop for focal points and key pieces. The circular fire-pit was used to break up the 90 degree angles of the space, and also played off the round pottery.

All these are actually quite hardy plants, so once established, your tropical garden is actually quite easy to maintain. Use this structure and apply it to your style. Research which plants you need to set your base for a modern garden and go from there.

Add some decor

If the plants don’t quite do it for you yet, or if you want to add some extra wow-factor, consider adding some extra features. Even if you can’t accommodate a swimming pool, hot tub or pond, you could look at smaller water features. Simple rocks can also have a great effect, while statues and gnomes will add some extra character. Don’t forget to add some furniture so you have a nice place to sit and enjoy your garden!
