Kew Sustainable gardening project completed March 2017. Design and plantscaping completed by Inspiring Landscape Solutions. Project Brief: plant and material advice; small outdoor area at frontage; retention of existing feature trees; maximum planting area in the rear for vegetable patches and edibles; and design improvement according to budget considerations. The design was originally done by another designer not conforming to their budget. Project Loves: customised raised corten planters, realising that the client loves hexagons :); problem solving for an eventual green fence without damaging it; injection of some artwork into their new and painted fencelines, adding visual texture and keeping up with the contemporary feel; and Practical use of space and plant power!

This photo was taken one year after the garden was built with the plants settled in and starting to put on good growth. The client wanted a low maintenance garden based on a Japanese theme. The original garden was a blank canvas as the house had just been built, however there was a considerable slope to the garden and it was quite overlooked. The design was based on a Japanese ‘Karesansui’ or dry landscape garden. To remove the slope the garden was tiered into an upper and lower level using large purbeck rocks. A dry river bed runs diagonally across the garden. Stepping stones allow access to the garden, with a Japanese style wooden humpback bridge crossing the dry river bed. This leads to an arbour in the corner, a place to sit, relax and enjoy views of the garden. Another seating area is located in the top corner of the garden next to a railway sleeper focal point. The planting scheme is low maintenance, being predominantly evergreen and offering all year round interest. Three feature blossoming Cherry trees were planted to further enhance the Japanese feel and prevent the garden from being overlooked. The end result is a calm and serene garden to sit and relax in and enjoy the different views.

This coastal farmhouse design is destined to be an instant classic. This classic and cozy design has all of the right exterior details, including gray shingle siding, crisp white windows and trim, metal roofing stone accents and a custom cupola atop the three car garage. It also features a modern and up to date interior as well, with everything you'd expect in a true coastal farmhouse. With a beautiful nearly flat back yard, looking out to a golf course this property also includes abundant outdoor living spaces, a beautiful barn and an oversized koi pond for the owners to enjoy.

This wooden area was overgrown and had no functional use for the homeowners. We were able to clear out the area and create useful space for them to enjoy the outdoors. By adding a dry stream bed we alleviated any potential issues with standing water, a mixture of medium river gravel and Glacier boulders were used in this feature. This project also included adding a seating area, a flagstone pathway, using Oakfield steppers, that provides access from the driveway. We added in greenery that is easier for the homeowner to maintain and still gives you the rustic appeal of being in the woods. In the front yard the walkway was completed using Copthorne Liberty pavers and Coral Bells were planted along the entrance.

Plant material used includes Japanese varieties of trees, shrubs and perennials woven together to create interest throughout each season.

This compact, urban backyard was in desperate need of privacy. We created a series of outdoor rooms, privacy screens, and lush plantings all with an Asian-inspired design sense. Elements include a covered outdoor lounge room, sun decks, rock gardens, shade garden, evergreen plant screens, and raised boardwalk to connect the various outdoor spaces. The finished space feels like a true backyard oasis.

Updated landscape to address lack of curb appeal in neighborhood. This landscape creates flow and interest throughout the property. A rock garden was installed in the back yard to address erosion and drainage issues at end of the back area.

For this garden project, we created a simple yet elegant pathway using three distinct but complementary earthen colors and textures. The pebbles and flat stones match the home’s multicolored brickwork walls. We added contrast with black soil and river rock. We planted small compact plants around this pathway which won’t create too much shade or hinder the view. The gently curving design leading to another part of the property arouses the viewer’s curiosity.
