A huge level change within this backyard required extensive armor stone wall to allow for the pool, patio and lush garden on a slope. Natural stone steps allow access to the low maintenance and drought tolerant garden and forested area beyond. Perennials prevail in this garden that boasts both colourful foliage and bountiful blooms making this space one of four season interest. Landscape Design and Photography by Melanie Rekola

Chicken coop/vegetable garden complex is hardworking and beautiful. Daylilies, geranium and gaillardia soften the front of the practical garden. Multiple layers of fencing keep out deer and raptors, and allows the owners' to control where the chickens can go. Rustic design gives a nod to the local rural community.

In south Seattle, a tiny backyard garden needed a makeover to add usability and create a sitting area for entertaining. Raised garden beds for edible plants provide the transition between the existing deck and new patio below, eliminating the need for a railing. A firepit provides the focal point for the new patio. Angles create drama and direct flow to the steel stairs and gate. Installed June, 2014.

This client required a sloping ramp from driveway to front door for wheelchair access. We built the ramp with Permeable concrete pavers to alleviate run-off rushing down slope. The ramp is hidden from the street view by the wall be built which we later augmented with a boxwood hedge. We installed low voltage lighting in the wall at the driveway entrance. We designed the project with Google Sketch-up. Very successful!

This ledgestone walkway provides access to the bottom of a steep slope. The specimens are dwarf spruces, pine and Laceleaf Japanese Maple. The bold texture at the top right is a Cucumber Magnolia that adds a tropical flavor. The Dianthus filled in nicely on both sides to help provide visual stability.
