We had an unfinished basement in our house that we wanted to finish to have some extra family space. I did the design work myself and the project took about 6 months. The space includes a main area for entertaining, a dedicated home theater and a couple of unfinished storage/utility areas. The lighted recessed areas in the pool table area are actually there to serve a purpose. In finishing the walls there would not have been enough room to have full motion of a pool cue. So I recessed these areas so we did not have to use a "short stick" in any area while playing. The square on the left of the TV is an LG "Art Cool" heating and A/C Unit. We had a cabinet built on the right to match and added the kids finger painting. This is where we house all of our remotes. We also added LED lighting into the baseboard to wash the walls in any color to suit our mood. We added LED lighting under the bar since I had some extra. Since the bar was built right under the HVAC ducting, there was limited space for lighting so we used a track light to maximize. Large open floor plan in basement with full built-in bar, fireplace, game room and seating for all sorts of activities. Cabinetry at the bar provided by Brookhaven Cabinetry manufactured by Wood-Mode Cabinetry. Cabinetry is constructed from maple wood and finished in an opaque finish. Glass front cabinetry includes reeded glass for privacy. Bar is over 14 feet long and wrapped in wainscot panels. Although not shown, the interior of the bar includes several undercounter appliances: refrigerator, dishwasher drawer, microwave drawer and refrigerator drawers; all, except the microwave, have decorative wood panels.

The client's basement was a poorly-finished strange place; was cluttered and not functional as an entertainment space. We updated to a club-like atmosphere to include a state of the art entertainment area, poker/card table, unique curved bar area, karaoke and dance floor area with a disco ball to provide reflecting fractals above to pull the focus to the center of the area to tell everyone; this is where the action is!

Underground rooms and basements are an obvious way to add extra space at home, allowing homeowners to increase the square meterage of their home but preserve valuable garden space. With their expansive, wide-open layout, there are also a wide variety of uses for an underground room or basement. Depending on your needs, you could use a basement conversion as a wine cellar, man cave, or as an additional family room. With basements a rarity in Australia and New Zealand, adding or utilising this extra space is sure to gain the attention of potential buyers and add value to your home.

Can I add an underground extension to my home?

The most suitable blocks for underground rooms are those on a sloping site, because they allow for adequate ventilation and natural light. The ability to excavate under your home is also largely dependant on the type of soil your home sits on and water drainage. For this reason, it’s important that you speak to a home builder who has experience in building sub-ground living spaces. Some homes may already have an underfloor area that is going unused, in which case it can be deepened or extended to utilise the space.

What should I use my basement for?

Essentially an attached extension to your home, a basement is perfect for additional living, recreational and utility rooms. It could, however, also provide you with an entirely separate, self-contained annexe or apartment. Popular basement conversions include media rooms, wine cellars and storage rooms, but more exciting (and luxurious) transformations have included indoor swimming pools, sports courts and drive-in garages. The most practical are additional bedrooms or bathrooms, especially if you have a growing family or regularly accommodate guests.
