The original kitchen in this 1960s ranch home was considerably smaller and separated from the rest of the home by a wall with a small opening. The wall also blocked the view to the original fireplace and built-in bookcase/desk (on the right - the left side was added as part of the remodel). By removing the wall, we were able to expand the kitchen while showcasing the fireplace. The new style of the kitchen has both modern and Craftsman elements - marrying the 60s ranch architecture of the home and the Arts and Crafts furniture and decorations of the homeowners. As is always the case, we design kitchens in a way where they are as practical as possible. We worked in order to ascertain how our clients would use their space, and ensured we designed their kitchen in a way which was natural their ways of cooking and entertaining. A variety of storage solutions were used to make this possible.

Resolving Condo Issues with Stretch Ceiling
Resolving Condo Issues with Stretch Ceiling

The issues that annoyed the family in this condo are common to new condo units: Low ceilings covered with a popcorn finish, small rooms, low light in the bedrooms and living room, and no ceiling light fixtures. Concrete ceilings are not only difficult to drill into to install fixtures, installing wiring behind them for such fixtures is impossible. There are often conduits for building services embedded in the concrete along with structural steel reinforcements, so drilling without x-raying first is dangerous. Laqfoil stretch ceiling provided a solution to all of these issues for this condo unit. A high gloss finish was chosen, as the reflections visually double the height of the space. Installing a stretch ceiling also naturally conceals the popcorn ceiling behind it, but in this case, was also used to conceal the wiring necessary to add ceiling lights in every room. The wiring was simply attached to the existing popcorn ceiling. Laqfoil stretch ceiling is supported around the perimeter only, by tracks, or profiles which are only about 0.75" thick. The ceiling membrane itself is less than one millimetre thick. We also added a small vector graphic, printed in each corner of the living room ceiling, for a unique aesthetic effect. We constructed a suspended bulkhead above the island and covered it with red high gloss membrane, to visually separate the kitchen and living room while keeping the design's open concept. This also provided a supporting structure for 3 mini chandelier pendant lights. A red rose depicted on a black and white textured ground was chosen for the kitchen ceiling and applied using digital wide format printing technology, to tie the red, black and white colour scheme with the kitchen cabinets' texture.

This eclectic kitchen has Soapstone countertops! Thanks Granite Grannies for fabricating this project and providing us this photo! http://www.granitegrannies.com Look through our soapstone or other stone options: http://www.stoneaction.com Soapstone is a classic. Stone colors are available in dark gray to blueish or greenish gray with light or dramatic veining. Over a period of time as soapstone ages it achieves a beautiful patina. When treated with mineral oil the stone will darken. Soapstone is an ideal kitchen countertop choice because it never has to been sealed and has high heat resistant properties. Soapstone, although soft, is a very dense (non-porous) stone. Most people are surprised to learn it is more dense than marble, slate, limestone and even granite. Since soapstone is impenetrable and it will not stain. No liquid will permeate its surface. This is why through the years soapstone is widely used in chemistry lab countertops and acid rooms. If you love the dark beauty of granite and the light veining of marble, consider soapstone instead. It's durable, relatively low-maintenance, and has a lovely, old-world feel.

Striking orange gloss cabinets and stainless steel worktops make this kitchen zing. Bi-folding glass doors open onto small but beautifully designed garden with the same flooring as the kitchen. Glass roof covers the side return extension.
