On top of the custom metal table base we installed limestone slabs. We decided wo add warmth to the space, by finding a reclaimed piece of wood and affixing it to a custom metal base.

The rustic ranch look of knotty cedar fencing gets a contemporary twist in our design of this Chelsea rooftop garden. This fencing gives some much needed privacy from a common roof, while the black and tan pergola casts a bit of welcome shade for seating on a sunny south-facing roof. Additional design elements include artificial turf, contemporary outdoor furniture, black fiberglass planters, and geometric custom lattices. When we first saw this roof garden’s existing pavers, they were very weathered and benefited greatly from a power washing to help clean and brighten them up, which made them look brand new again. The owners of this shared Brooklyn rooftop garden needed to create three individual spaces without feeling too closed off, dark, or boxed in. The solution is a series of custom cedar trellises at varying heights mixed with lightweight planters that delineate each of the owner's deeded spaces. Flowering vines grow through the trellises to provide added privacy during the warmer months as well as pops of color and texture. River birch trees offer dappled shade and dimension, flowering perennials add color, fragrance, and attract pollinators, and ornamental grasses provide texture and movement while also masking some ugly HVAC units. The resulting rooftop space is open and breezy while also giving each family their own special private oasis.

The goal of this landscape design and build project was to create a roof deck patio and green roof. The patio features square concrete unit pavers, sedum ground cover, and planters with small trees. Modern patio furniture was chosen to facilitate large and small gatherings alike overlooking the Boston skyline. Designed and built by Skyline Landscapes, LLC.

Private rooftop space utilized for lounging and entertaining in this converted factory loft. Built-in planters utilize the most of this space while giving it a refined, polished look. Ceramic and terra cotta pots were added to warm up the area and give it a sense of whimsicality. Both evergreen and deciduous plants were used for variety, with a beautiful Japanese maple as a stand alone focal point. Classic outdoor furniture gives a sense of formality in this versatile space.

How to Create a Garden for Your Home

Decide which plants to use

The greenery you choose is critical to your look. For example, if you’re trying to create a tropical garden palm trees and bamboo are your go-to options. Other popular options are golden cane palm trees and fern for ground cover. From there you can add some colour with bright flowers like frangipani, hibiscus or bromeliads. All these are actually quite hardy plants, so once established, your tropical garden is actually quite easy to maintain. Use this structure and apply it to your style. Research which plants you need to set your base for a garden and go from there.

Add some decor

If the plants don’t quite do it for you yet, or if you want to add some extra wow-factor, consider adding some extra features. Even if you can’t accommodate a swimming pool, hot tub or pond, you could look at smaller water features. Simple rocks can also have a great effect, while statues and gnomes will add some extra character. Don’t forget to add some furniture so you have a nice place to sit and enjoy your garden!
