After the second fallout of the Delta Variant amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic in mid 2021, our team working from home, and our client in quarantine, SDA Architects conceived Japandi Home. The initial brief for the renovation of this pool house was for its interior to have an "immediate sense of serenity" that roused the feeling of being peaceful. Influenced by loneliness and angst during quarantine, SDA Architects explored themes of escapism and empathy which led to a “Japandi” style concept design – the nexus between “Scandinavian functionality” and “Japanese rustic minimalism” to invoke feelings of “art, nature and simplicity.” This merging of styles forms the perfect amalgamation of both function and form, centred on clean lines, bright spaces and light colours. Grounded by its emotional weight, poetic lyricism, and relaxed atmosphere; Japandi Home aesthetics focus on simplicity, natural elements, and comfort; minimalism that is both aesthetically pleasing yet highly functional. Japandi Home places special emphasis on sustainability through use of raw furnishings and a rejection of the one-time-use culture we have embraced for numerous decades. A plethora of natural materials, muted colours, clean lines and minimal, yet-well-curated furnishings have been employed to showcase beautiful craftsmanship – quality handmade pieces over quantitative throwaway items. A neutral colour palette compliments the soft and hard furnishings within, allowing the timeless pieces to breath and speak for themselves. These calming, tranquil and peaceful colours have been chosen so when accent colours are incorporated, they are done so in a meaningful yet subtle way. Japandi home isn’t sparse – it’s intentional. The integrated storage throughout – from the kitchen, to dining buffet, linen cupboard, window seat, entertainment unit, bed ensemble and walk-in wardrobe are key to reducing clutter and maintaining the zen-like sense of calm created by these clean lines and open spaces. The Scandinavian concept of “hygge” refers to the idea that ones home is your cosy sanctuary. Similarly, this ideology has been fused with the Japanese notion of “wabi-sabi”; the idea that there is beauty in imperfection. Hence, the marriage of these design styles is both founded on minimalism and comfort; easy-going yet sophisticated. Conversely, whilst Japanese styles can be considered “sleek” and Scandinavian, “rustic”, the richness of the Japanese neutral colour palette aids in preventing the stark, crisp palette of Scandinavian styles from feeling cold and clinical. Japandi Home’s introspective essence can ultimately be considered quite timely for the pandemic and was the quintessential lockdown project our team needed.

Attention transformation spectaculaire !! Cette cuisine est superbe, c’est vraiment tout ce que j’aime : De belles pièces comme l’îlot en céramique effet marbre, la cuve sous plan, ou encore la hotte très large; De la technologie avec la TV motorisée dissimulée dans son bloc et le puit de lumière piloté directement de son smartphone; Une association intemporelle du blanc et du bois, douce et chaleureuse. On se sent bien dans cette spacieuse cuisine, autant pour cuisiner que pour recevoir, ou simplement, prendre un café avec élégance. Les travaux préparatoires (carrelage et peinture) ont été réalisés par la société ANB. Les photos ont été réalisées par Virginie HAMON. ES ist vollbracht, ein Unikat ist entstanden. Als erstes wurde die alte Küche abgebaut und die Elektrik für die neue Küche und die neuen Leuchten verlegt. Danach wurden die alten Fliesen entfernt, die Wände verputzt, geglättet und in einem zarten Rosaton gestrichen. Der wunderschöne Betonspachtelboden wurde von unserem Malermeister in den Raum gezaubert. Dann war es soweit, die neue Küche wurde geliefert und die Montage konnte beginnen. Wir haben uns für eine polarweiß matte Front mit graphitgrauen Korpus (Innenleben) entschieden. An den Fronten finden unsere gedrechselten, massiven Nussbaumknöpfe ihren perfekten Platz, die mit der maßangefertigten Wandverkleidung (dahinter versteckt sich der Heizkörper) und der Sitzgruppe super harmonieren. Selbst die Besteckeinsätze sind aus Nussbaum gefertigt. Die Geräte stammen alle, bis auf den Siemens-Einbauwaschtrockner, der sich links neben der Spüle hinter der Tür verbirgt, aus dem Hause Miele. Die Spüle und Armatur kommen aus der Schmiede der Dornbracht Manufaktur, deren Verarbeitung und Design einzigartig ist. Um dem ganzen die Krone aufzusetzen haben wir uns beim Granit für einen, nur für uns gelieferten Stein entschieden. Wir hatten diesen im letzten Sommer in Italien entdeckt und mussten diesen unbedingt haben. Die Haptik ist ähnlich wie Leder und fühlt sich samtweich an. Nach der erfolgreichen Montage wurden noch die weißen Panzeri Einbaustrahler eingebaut und wir konnten die Glasschiebetüre montieren. Bei dieser haben wir uns bewusst für eine weiße Oberführung entschieden damit am Boden keine Schiene zu sehen ist. Bilder (c) raumwerkstätten GmbH

C'est dans une sublime maison de maître de Montchat, dans le 3ème arrondissement de Lyon que s'installe ce projet. Deux espaces distincts ont laissé place à un volume traversant, exploitant la grande hauteur sous plafond et permettant de profiter de la lumière naturelle tout au long de la journée. Afin d'accentuer cet effet traversant, la cuisine sur-mesure a été imaginée tout en longueur avec deux vastes linéaires qui la rende très fonctionnelle pour une famille de 5 personnes. Le regard circule désormais de la cour au jardin et la teinte des éléments de cuisine ainsi que le papier-peint font entrer la nature à l'intérieur.

The kitchen/dining/family area overlooks the garden to the rear of the plot. The kitchen can be screened off from the rest of the ground floor with sliding birch ply panels. The kitchen comprises of 2 freestanding units from Bulthaup (one with a sink), an American fridge/freezer, a 100cm wide range cooker and a free standing dishwasher. It is a linear kitchen with the dining table occupying the space where one might choose to place an island. We felt that an island would be intrusive in the space and interrupt the flow of space from front courtyard to rear garden.
