Some spaces are best understood before and after. Our Carytown Kitchen project demonstrates how a small space can be transformed for minimal expense. First and foremost was maximizing space. With only 9 sf of built-in counter space we understood these work surfaces needed to be kept free of small appliances and clutter - and that meant extra storage. The introduction of high wall cabinets provides much needed storage for occasional use equipment and helps keep everything dust-free in the process. Photograph by Stephen Barling.

Removing the wall between the old kitchen and great room allowed room for two islands, work flow and storage. A beverage center and banquet seating was added to the breakfast nook. The laundry/mud room matches the new kitchen and includes a step in pantry.

Our client for this project is a financier who has a beautiful home in the suburbs but wanted a second home in NYC as he spent 2-4 nights a week in the city. He wanted an upscale pied-à-terre that was soothing, moody, textural, comfortable, and contemporary while also being family-friendly as his college-age children might use it too. The apartment is a new build in Tribeca, and our New York City design studio loved working on this contemporary project. The entryway welcomes you with dark gray, deeply textured wallpaper and statement pieces like the angular mirror and black metal table that are an ode to industrial NYC style. The open kitchen and dining are sleek and flaunt statement metal lights, while the living room features textured contemporary furniture and a stylish bar cart. The bedroom is an oasis of calm and relaxation, with the textured wallpaper playing the design focal point. Our clients are a young couple from Kent, who were extending their Victorian terrace in London. While the original property is full of quirky period features, the clean dimensions of the large, rectangular extension made the space ideal for one of our Modular Kitchens. We worked closely with our clients to select the cabinetry that best suited their needs, including a single door larder cupboard with built-in spice racks, two sets of pan drawers and a central island unit with plenty of storage. Traditional features such as the farmhouse sink and range cooker are in keeping with the character of the original property, while the client’s choice of a contemporary colour scheme simultaneously gives the space a funky, modern feel.

For starters, you want to find a balance between aesthetics and function. You may have heard of the ‘kitchen work triangle’, which refers to the space between your fridge, sink and stove. You want everything within easy reach when you’re working in the kitchen and look beautiful at the same time. It’s a good idea to take note of both when browsing our photo gallery.

2. Consider Your Space to Determine Your Kitchen Layout

Firstly, consider the space you have, and the limitations that come with it. Do you have a small kitchen and need to maximise your workspace and storage?
