Blending a modern sensibility with traditional architecture, this garden features a front yard meadow with native grasses (Carex praecracilis) and wildflowers. Poured-in-place concrete pavers in a meandering pattern slow the approach from the sidewalk to the entry. The modestly-sized backyard has been maximized for entertaining with outdoor dining and lounging areas and subtle landscape lighting. Native plants, herbs, and edibles share the back garden beds, and a raised pond brings the garden to life.

This Rooftop retreat looks as if it is on the ground. The objective is to make the client feel as if it was a backyard not a rooftop. With Artificial truf, warm wood colors and plants that soften the walls that surround you it looks as if this rooftop retreat is in the suburbs. Photo taken by Expressiveshoots.com

Urban Garden Designer, Angel Islington, North London
This North London Urban Garden Design was previously an overgrown, crazy paved 50s garden, with gnomes hidden under ivy clad walls, which needed a radical designer makeover to become a contemporary North London courtyard, with an onus on entertaining.
Space was tight and so was the light, being a small and contained courtyard. In answer to this, I introduced an l-shaped raised bed with built-in balau cantilevered seats, which were under-lit, to offer more visual space, whist also acting as the main feature. A built-in 'fire-pit-cum-barbecue' added the extra wow factor for entertaining and keeping. I enhanced the low walls with bespoke, slatted trellis and a feature clad-slatted wall, by the French doors.
The low maintenance, ecological planting was architectural, sculptural and bold, whilst also being mainly evergreen and texturally interesting.

Dig Your Garden Landscape Design
This tired, unused San Francisco backyard was transformed into a modern, low-maintenance landscape with site-appropriate plantings enhanced by raised planting beds and a lead-free artificial lawn to replace the existing water-thirsty lawn. I created two separate "rooms" to break up the long narrow yard, and specified full range blue stone for the two small patio areas, connected by a curved pattern of rectangular pavers of the same natural stone. The raised concrete rectangular planting beds were incorporated to bring more movement and interest to the landscape along with gravel bed accents alongside. Some of the existing concrete remained, and was stained with a color to compliment the natural stone. These photos were taken over a three year period.
