A traditonally design partierre garden using new school materials creates a powerful punch of WOW in this vegetable garden! Custom designed and built steel planters were sand blasted and allowed to rust. The rust color picks up the matching tones in the beautiful natural sandstone path. Intermixing perennials and annuals with the herbs and vegetables makes for an exhuburant bouqet of color and texture.

This two-story ranch house was built on a steep hill posing the challenges of solid retainment and surface drainage control. The existing plants and walkways were overgrown, damaged, and out of scale with the house. The front yard was completely regraded and seeded to provide enough slope and pitch for runoff to drain into the rear yard's existing rain garden swale. A paver walkway wide enough for two was installed followed by a mix of deciduous and evergreen ground covers, perennials, grasses, shrubs, and trees. Outcrop stones were chosen to project the home's beige/limestone facade tones out into the surrounding landscape.

Benefiting from varied stone and gravel hardscapes, this back yard is used in many ways. Transitions are marked with a change in structure of paths, walls, and features. The dining area is defined by a seat wall that ends where the fire feature area starts. Garden beds surround the space as an accent, softening the space. A rugged yet warm design for a relatively small back yard. Photo Credit: Linda Oyama Bryan

The Japanese GardenThe Japanese Garden
This zen garden is located on a central courtyard that connects the kitchen of the house, with the living - dining area and main access hall. As you can see it is glazed on several sides, each view after concluded the work is slightly different. This time, only put a lamp in Japanese style to give the night lighting environment. This is a sample of a Zen garden that carries an implicit minimalist in design. The conditions in the house are basically clear and minimalist tones, it is for that reason that it was decided to this design. Few elements, well distributed, with a mix of different textures, from coarse gravel and dark gray color, contrasting with the white gravel and raked; allows us to balance the wabi sabi and the scene.

Stepping stone placement and spacing is important within a contemporary backyard design plan. Spacing depends on the size of your stones and the desired aesthetic. For a contemporary look, we chose wider gaps between stones, creating a deliberate and eye-catching pattern. As for layout, we created a clear and intentional path with the stepping stones. You can opt for a straight path, a gently curving one, or even a geometric design, such as a grid or zigzag pattern, to achieve a contemporary feel. Placing the stepping stones and gravel strategically provides easy access to your garden beds and other areas of interest in your backyard. This path is both functional and visually appealing.

The open plan area at the rear of the property is undoubtedly the heart of the home. Here, an extension by Charlotte Heather Interiors has resulted in a very long room that encompasses the kitchen, dining and sitting areas. Natural light was a prerequisite for the clients so Charlotte cleverly incorporated roof lights along the space to maximise the light and diffuse it beautifully throughout the day. ‘Early in the morning, the light comes down into the kitchen area where the clients enjoy a coffee, then towards the afternoon the light extends towards the sitting area where they like to read,’ reveals Charlotte. Vast rear bi-folding doors contribute to the space being bathed in light and allow for impressive inside outside use. Entertaining is key to the kitchen and dining area. Warm whites and putty shades envelop the kitchen, which is punctuated by the deep blue of the decorative extractor fan and also the island designed specifically for guests to sit while the client cooks. Brass details sing out and link to the brassware in the master bathroom. Reinforcing the presence of exquisite craftsmanship, a Carl Hansen dining table and chairs in rich walnut injects warmth into the space. A bespoke Tollgard leaf artwork was specially commissioned for the space and brings together the dominant colours in the house. The relaxed sitting area is a perfect example of a space specifically designed to reflect the clients’ needs. The clients are avid readers and bespoke cabinetry houses their vast collection of books. The sofa in the clients’ favourite shade of teal and a dainty white boucle chair are perfect for curling up and reading, while also escalating the softness and femininity in the space. Beyond the bifold doors, the pergola extends the living space further and is designed to provide natural shading and privacy. The space is designed for stylish alfresco entertaining with its chic Carl Hansen furniture. Luxury sheepskins and an outdoor fireplace help combat inclement temperatures. The perfect finishing touch is the wisteria and jasmine that were specially selected to drape over the pergola because they remind the clients of home and also because they echo beautiful blossom.

Japanese inspired zen garden with use of traditional Acer's, Azalea's and topiary rounded shrubs. We fenced with bamboo and created a traditional bamboo 'wall' canopy to 'keep the world' out. A peaceful space with little upkeep.

A Japanese style garden with the aim of creating an ambiance of tranquillity. Our design included the gentle sound from a water feature and shelter to sit in under a feature pod seat with illumination for the warmer evenings. Lush green planting and a variety of textures surround the stepping stone path that meanders through the front and rear garden space.

Ricardo is passionate about sustainable forestry. He specialises in renewable energy using natural systems in nature and we have created an environment that reflects this within his home. In this project we chose paintings that express fluidity and fengshui to embrace the wind and water elements of nature. To purify the air, we created a moss wall and the lush grass carpet generates the comforting sense of forest bathing. The splashback evokes the peaceful experience of walking in the forest amongst a sea of bluebells generating a sense of spring and new beginings. The bathroom is inspired by the vast, lush Amazon Rainforest and it's natural biodiversity. With the artwork here, we created an alluring tranquil space, incorporating natural raw materials and spiritual artefacts, brining a sense of calm and rejuvenation.
