Our homeowners were looking for a garden where they could sit by the fire, grow vegetable and hear the sound of water. Their home was new construction in a modern farmhouse style. We used gravel and concrete as paving. Board formed concrete firepit keeps it feeling modern. The vegetable beds supply season vegetables and herbs.

From the street, a round rock pathway leads to a small seating area next to the water with a small fire pit. Low maintenance, drought resistant and salt tolerant plantings were used in mass and clumps. This garden has become the focus of the neighborhood with many visitors stopping and enjoying what has become a neighborhood landmark. Located on the shores of Puget Sound in Washington State. This rose garden is half hidden and the curving path entices you to explore further. Creating a sense of mystery by partially obscuring the boundaries of the garden increases the sense of space.

Soft colourful plantings along the pathway, seasonal interest begins in early spring and the planting is still colourful in late summer. Less than a year old the planting was installed last October 2019 and now in August, it looks like it has always been there.

This garden design for the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show consisted of 9 regularly spaced reflective pools with planting surrounding each. Inspired by the Roman Baths in Bath, these perfect squares suggested the regularity of the Hypocaust columns and serve as a reminder of the city’s relationship with water.
The concept for the planting is ‘A modern meadow’; the mix of forms and colours is intentionally unusual. Well defined flower heads and shrubs in the foreground contrast against a hazy ‘fluffy’ backdrop evocative of steam rising from the hot spring water.
The use of plants such as euphorbia, lavender, santolina and rosemary combined with breedon gravel paths evoke a mediterranean feel.
