The client wanted to transform the backyard into a space that would be perfect for relaxing or for entertaining friends and family. On the wishlist were a pool, an outdoor living space, and an outdoor kitchen. The design started by locating the vinyl liner, rectangular swimming pool (with auto cover) in the optimal location. From there, we designed an outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven off the back of the house. Nearby, we included a cabana with bar seating, a TV, and a bathroom. All of this is on a Nicolock Alpine Ridge Granite City blend paver patio. To work with the existing slope of the property, we designed and installed a raised patio on one side of the pool; the perfect spot for lounging poolside. Lush plantings were installed to create multi-seasonal interest throughout the backyard and pool area.

The pool is outfitted with 3 LED colored lights, as well as 3 separate benches measuring 4’0” long. There is a 6’7” sun shelf adjacent to the hot tub that has 3 LED colored bubbler jets. Additionally there is a 16” x 16’ long step situated just 1” below the water line. The waterline, hot tub top and step are cladded with Valders Limestone. The pool coping is 3” thick x 18” wide Valders Limestone in Gray, with a bevelled edge detail. The pool also features an in-floor cleaning system. Covering both the pool and hot tub is an automatic hydraulic pool cover system with a custom stone walk-on lid system and a hidden leading edge bar detail. At the end opposite the hot tub is an infinity edge system. Behind the pool on the side with the hot tub is a raised wall water feature. Both the raised wall and the infinity edge basin are illuminated with LED lighting. Our client's childhood memories of summer fun in her parents' pool and family time on Long Beach Island, NJ is what she wanted to recreate for her own children in the comfort of their backyard. The client's wish list included a pool that was versatile for all ages and activities. We teamed up with Liquidscapes to assist with the pool design process to ensure functionality and quality was achieved. The saltwater pool has a swim lane, sun-shelf, deck jets, built-in seating and a raised spa with an 8' spillway! The pool deck is built with limestone, which remains cool in the hot sun. A custom pavilion cantilevers the deep end of the pool serving as a shady poolside lounge. The wavy garden beds were designed to complement the freeform shape of the pool. The landscape consists of multi-layered magnolias, ilex, and cryptomeria to ensure privacy year round. Fagus, lagerstroemia, and cotinus add in-season privacy, color, and contrast. The large garden beds are filled with lush hydrangeas, perennials, perennial grasses, and ferns. During our presentation for the front of the property, which is the final phase of this project, our client said to us: "Over the years we have dealt with many design and build companies and we're very happy we finally found one that is a pleasure to work with and cares about delivering high quality results.”

Swimming pools are heavenly during hot Australian and New Zealand summers and are the perfect way to cool down, relax, entertain friends and even get fit. A traditional pool can also create visual interest, especially when you consider features like coloured pool tiles, lighting and landscaping. If you are short on space, you might still fit a lap pool, plunge pool or swim spa, all of which could be focal points in your small garden. As you plan your traditional pool design, map out your space and determine what size, shape and style works best for you. What type of pool should I install?

The dimensions of your traditional backyard will determine the type of inground pools you can install. Take into account boundary restrictions and pool fencing compliance. A cheaper alternative is aluminium or steel fencing, which, again, are available in a variety of styles: flat top, loop-top, double-top and wire-based.

What pool landscaping features should I consider?

To get the most out of your traditional pool, design an area that offers multiple hangouts. Include a nearby barbecue, dining area, seating for lounging and outdoor shower. Having shaded areas will give you more reason to stay poolside longer, too. Timber decking and stone paving are popular choices for pool surrounds, and are also helpful in creating zones. Just imagine a raised timber platform with a daybed – a luxurious, resort-style addition to any pool design. Leafy trees and rocks will create a more natural-looking oasis, and will help provide more privacy for swimmers. Where you want your landscape to be the main focus, keep pool equipment and furnishings to a minimum.
