This propery is situated on the south side of Centre Island at the edge of an oak and ash woodlands. orignally, it was three properties having one house and various out buildings. topographically, it more or less continually sloped to the water. Our task was to creat a series of terraces that were to house various functions such as the main house and forecourt, cottage, boat house and utility barns.
The immediate landscape around the main house was largely masonry terraces and flower gardens. The outer landscape was comprised of heavily planted trails and intimate open spaces for the client to preamble through. As the site was largely an oak and ash woods infested with Norway maple and japanese honey suckle we essentially started with tall trees and open ground. Our planting intent was to introduce a variety of understory tree and a heavy shrub and herbaceous layer with an emphisis on planting native material. As a result the feel of the property is one of graciousness with a challenge to explore.

Emphasizing the ground plain with sinewy curves and interesting textures helps to draw attention away from the narrowness of the space and the bland façade of the neighboring structure. Shrubs, perennials, grasses and groundcovers offer year round interest.

While this dry riverbed was created in front of a commercial building, this idea can be used in a yard as well to create movement and a focal point in an area where it might be challenging to grow certain things.

A front entry that breaks the suburban mold. By replacing the sidewalk with masonry the house automatically becomes custom with a personal touch. A low maintenance plant palette cuts down water usage, adds character and creates visual interest.
LAND BY DESIGN
Another example of the beautiful variety of texture and color that changes with every season. Plantings surround a small breakfast area patio where the clients enjoy morning coffee under the filtered sun.

Designed an entry with maximum drama. Used a black paver in a herringbone pattern with a very wide soldier edge. Took this front entrance from nice to spectacular- just by changing the walkway, that absolutely does invite company. We added lighting for extra nighttime beauty.
