WORK IN PROGRESS. Hot-tub patio is being reshaped and the informal path laid to connect it with the dining patio by the house. The 'decking' path is actually made of wood-effect concrete planks. These were chosen because unlike real wood they are zero maintenance, and slip & splinter proof for hot-tubbers' bare feet. The mowing-strip is a practical feature, but also defines the curve of the design. Photo by Sue Knighton

Notice the custom aluminum siding in the upper left hand corner(it is a screen), the tri colored beech tree, the ledgered raised garden beds, gravel surface for the raised vegetable planters, the core ten steel raised vegetable beds, custom in line drip irrigation, the custom built fire glass table, the forty five degree custom belgard pavers, the fragrant plants and the espaliered fruit trees against the back fence.

9 months after installation. 'Full Range' flagstone used for seating area. Existing veggie boxes were modified and reused to better fit the space. Decomposed granite provides walking access around the boxes. Plants like Lavender, Yarrow and Hummingbird Sage support the existing fruit trees by attracting pollinators, adding flowers and pleasant smells to the garden.. This backyard landscape plan transformed this backyard. We installed a brick paver patio, garden retaining wall, brick outdoor fireplace, new sod, new plants, mulch, vegetable garden, and installed a new storage building.

This project is a townhome in Baltimore, so it’s urban. It consists of a small front garden, sidewalk planting, and rear garden. I designed and installed the plantings for all of the areas. Our team also installed two rain barrels, one in the front and one in the rear. Our team first removed a portion of the sidewalk in front in order to create a new garden bed. We edged the bed with granite cobblestones. I designed a mix of beautiful flowering perennials and also an herb garden in the front bed. For the rear garden I designed a native grass lawn for the bench area and a shade garden.

Native Sun Gardens
Here is native ground cover. Easier and more appealing than a lawn. It uses less water, as well.

The Ardent Gardener Landscape Design
A beautifully designed and installed stone patio anchors the back garden. The red sandstone spiral winds through the patio, then bursts out into the garden. Raised, cirucular beds follow the spiral, increasing in height as they come to the end of the spiral.

A boulder retaining wall creates a rustic, beach vibe in the back yard. The stone stairs leading up to the patio and pool area are made from large basalt chunks.
