“Sasha from BLOK Architecture did a fantastic job redesigning the back of our 1920s home and adding on a screened porch and a deck. The entire process, from conception, to ironing out the details, to ensuring that everything was constructed as planned, went very smoothly. Sasha took a lot of time to listen to and understand what we were trying to accomplish. He initially presented us with 3 different concepts and then worked closely with us fine tune the details of the design. In addition, given the location of the house in a historic district, we needed to maintain the historic nature of the house and neighborhood and fulfill the requirements of the historic commission. Sasha was well versed in all of this as was very evident both in the ease with which we received approval and the way his design meshed so well with the rest of the house. It was amazing to watch what had been useless, awkward space develop into a beautiful bathroom, library, and laundry room. Meanwhile the porch makes us feel like we are relaxing out in the woods rather than actually in the center of Durham. Sasha even devised a system to allow us to enclose the screened porch for cold weather at some point, while maintaining the porch as open as possible. We can’t thank Sasha enough. He was able to accomplish all of our goals while maintaining the historic nature of the house and staying within our budget. What we ended up with was a house way beyond our dreams. The design was excellent, communication was very easy, the costs were very fair and transparent, and the end results were perfect.”

“Calico Studio was like working with old friends (they provided full design and construction document services for a ground up custom home)! I had the real potential of being a "client-zilla" with an architectural degree of my own, a bit of an analytical nature, active in commercial RE & construction all of my career, and worst of all, no true idea of what I wanted besides the spaces and a rough floor plan sketch. Just coming out of nearly 30 yrs where my ex defined and chose our style, I only had a swirl of thoughts (a big Houzz ideabook), and a jumble of images in my head. “My husband and I live in a beautiful location on the Haw River and wanted to remodel part of our home to take advantage of the views and river access. We entertain frequently and wanted more room in the right places and also good flow from room to room. I am an artist, and my husband enjoys woodworking. We wanted spaces that reinforced our aspirations. We decided to add a den with a wood stove, a screened in porch with cat walk to our large back deck, a new kitchen, an art studio, and a workshop. To keep costs down, we hoped to use significant floor space in a poorly-used two car garage. We had some design ideas for the finished product, but mainly, we knew what we wanted to achieve in the way we live in our house and on our property. We looked for an architect with imagination and with good taste who could pull it all together for us. Alicia Ravetto was the perfect choice for our project. She immediately understood what we were after, and she designed spaces that creatively achieved all our criteria. She was very organized in how she handled the developing plans. We could look back and see how we moved from step to step. This was important in constantly bringing us back to the goals we set at the very beginning. Alicia met deadlines and was fun and honest to work with throughout the project. There were significant cost overruns, but this is because we were so happy with what we saw happening, we asked for more and more. We are thrilled with the outcome. It is wonderful living in our "new" custom home.”
