The relatively small kitchen, needs storage and function from wherever it can be found, and I finally decided to replace the shallow baker’s rack against the wall that was jammed with fruits and vegetables, baskets, decorative bowls, the kitchen radio and some cook books, with a full-wall shelving installation that also looked beautiful. I was terrified! Enter Michael Hampton, highly recommended by a neighbor for whom he is the architect on her home addition. Although I had a clear vision in my head for what I wanted, I didn’t trust my eye to make it work and actually look like an intentional design. From the first, he spent a lot of time just getting to know a little bit about me, my general style, the look of the entire house, etc. I was relieved when he described his working process with clients as collaborative. I was surprised that a busy architect/designer would even consider working on such a small project. He turned out to be much more than a designer. He was a design coach who empowered me in ways I found surprising, to trust my decisions. He made it clear from the beginning that my thoughts and choices were sound and that I should trust myself. It was pretty much the reverse of the process I had observed on TV design shows where the designer creates the overall design and brings the client a limited number of preselected choices of materials, colors, etc. Here, Mike made professional drawings of the design that was in my head. We talked about the possible color and materials choices for the wall and we both brought samples back for discussion. Along the way, he showed me ways to look at small samples that could help me to envision them for the finished work. For so many of the bigger choices we made, he would let me know that he had a preference but first wanted to know what mine was. They were often the same, but even if they weren’t I ended up feeling secure in my choice. During the installation, Mike was present every step of the way, bringing his construction expertise to the discussions we had with the master craftsman who was doing the installation. Because it was a unique design, we needed to make changes and decisions as we went along. I am now overwhelmed by the finished product—in my eyes, a work of art. It is a beautiful design in its own right—a wall installation with shelves, plenty of space for storing food, bowls, baskets, and other items, as well as a display area for some favorite art works, for decorative baskets, and more. I can’t say enough about Mike Hampton. His demeanor is low key, but through his understated way of interacting, a highly talented designer and teacher, who is always kind and respectful, shines through.”
