Need an inexpensive granite-like kitchen island covering. Our kitchen island is 5' x 7', currently tiled. We would like to replace the tile but can't afford the bids for granite. What would you suggest?
go to a fabricator and get an old "reclaimed" slab of granite from someone else's remodel. I visited several fabricators who had replaced "old" granite counter tops with new ones... its a thought, plus it gets recycled.
Another option would be to by a "smaller" piece of granite and frame it with wood. You could also buy several small granite pieces and smash them up. then do a mosaic on the top. It would take a lot less granite yet still have that look. Good luck!
There are granite tiles that you can use. Or you could do a high quality lamitate, many of the newer tops at places like lowes and home depot are much more affordable and will look very nice! Look on DIY network they also have some ideas for thin pieces of granite that can be used on a wood framed counter top and look just as beautiful!
