We actually didn't do much to our barrel to prepare it to be a shower basin. We were fortunate enough that the center board in the bottom fit our drain perfectly. We did not sand the edges of the barrel. We also did not seal the barrel as doing so would prevent the wood from soaking up water...without the wood getting wet regularly, it would shrink and leak (or worse yet...fall apart).
