Tough to deal with in an appartment setting on a terrace. Very tough. Start talking to your condo board about what can and cannot be done to the exterior. You may find your ideas will shrink dramatically with their rules/regulations.

Thanks for your comments. Not hopeful that the condo board will go for any structure, so maybe I'll just try to do more planting - or perhaps play some music outdoors :)

My house backs up to a major road, and I can tell you that there's very little you can do about the noise short of staying inside. I don't mean to sound unkind or unhelpful, but I've been going through this for over 20 years and there aren't a lot of solutions short of concrete walls or huge berms.

Out of sight, out of mind. I think the screen idea will at least block the view and try to get outside when the traffic dies down.

Thanks everyone. I know when we bought the apartment we did sit outside and consider the noise but decided we could live with it - and we can, of course. Just thought I'd tap into the genius of Houzz to see if there was a magic answer :)

A water fountain.

Are you on the street or do you back up to a highway? If you have enough room, consider adding some container evergreens in front of the hedge to provide layering.

We solve this issue with our clients all of the time with outdoor water features. We recommend getting a water wall that is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Not only will they drown out the noise but will also act as a nice privacy wall.

Bring out a boom box and play music softly? A variety of windchimes may do the trick.
