Do you have shutters on the back of your house? We have ones on the front which we love but none in the back....wasn't sure if people had them in the back as well.
Shutters, historically, are used to protect the interior during inclement weather while still allowing air flow through a home. This is obviously prior to the invention of HVAC. In such an instance, the shutters would have been on all the bedroom and public space windows. The bathrooms would not have had shutters, typically.
Now, in our modern day of fake historicism and ornamental application the "shutter" is usually not even a functional element, and instead is screwed to the wall as a decorative element only. Since shutters are not cheap they are generally only on the front elevation presenting a "best foot forward" to the streetscape.
If you have shutters that are not functional I do not recommend installing them on the rear or side of your home. If the are functional with appropriate hardware then I'd say go for it.
As an architecture firm specializing in contemporary classical architecture, we often take style into consideration when designing a home. Shutters should play a functional role, but can definitely add greatly to the aesthetic value of the structure as well. For example, our Country Residence project features shutters in both the front and rear of the home to create a residence that is reminiscent of classical French-style houses.
