I have just taken a couple more pictures (excuse the untidy house) from the stairs. As you can see it's an open plan area that isn't that big but very high ceilings also in wood (Macrocarpa) with dark wooden beams. The house is surrounded by bush so quite a dark house. I initially considered a darker wood similar to the beams but not sure if that will make the house appear smaller / darker...I'm really not sure what to do!?!?!? Thanks

Art gallery wall definitely - either one very large dramatic artwork or a selection of black and white prints - could be some of your own photos enlarged, printed in black and white and framed in black. But you also need something under the stairs on the floor. I liked the plant suggestion, or perhaps a large basket or some sort of natural material holdall. How about a stand/table for umbrellas, bags etc?

Joanna Gains style is fun! What you choose for lighting and surfaces will determine the amount of reflective light in your stairway. The Architect is right in what he is suggesting "a decorative wall" could bring more light into the space. I believe you could apply this on principle....for example you could do a feature "Architectural Mirror"or lots of mirrors on the wall in the right position to reflect light in "Joanna Gain style" then in the same style add an eye catching pendant or wall lights depending on what is best functionally. Remember what you use on the ceiling & walls is important too every surface counts for your situation. Try a satin finish with a cool white like Dulux "St Clair Quarter" or Resene "Black White" Maybe Nancy's suggestions of a skylight is an option for your situation if it allows ? Hi Lina, i see what you mean about the awkward layout. Although it seems great to have some much room for transition it doesn't leave a great deal for functional living. Is there any wall behind the wicker chair? I'm wondering if reshuffling the tv to be on the stair wall would work?
