Please help me save my hallway tiles!
This weekend I discovered a gem underneath laminate flooring in our hallway. We are currently undergoing a major renovation and the builder has told me there will be a 3cm difference in height between the hallway and the new open plan flooring. I do not want to lose this piece of history, so how do I find a happy compromise without having a step? Use a thick rug? Door leading to that area will also be problematic. The part nearest the build has been damaged and I have to prove today that it runs to the front door to see if it’s worth keeping. I just want to restore it, no matter what, but can I do about the step?

6 years agoOk, so I've tried to delete this post as I've just picked up the rest of the laminate and think that the flooring will need to be replaced. The floor level isn't the only issue. Previous owners have welded other tiles to the original ones (which is where the black glue is coming from). Also, we are soon to be running a new mains water pipe through the house and the flooring will need to come up in the hall. We are having a new boiler and pipe replaced because it currently takes 15 minutes to run a bath. I will be contacting a restoration company today to see if they can advise.

Comments (25)There are tons of papers available that would go with your midcentury home. Many people tire of a paper quicker than they are ready to redecorate and they can also look dated in a couple of years. Metallic papers were big im midcentury...perhaps a metallic silver paper? Are you also considering paint? You can get it in so many textures and a blue wall to match the blue in your loveseat would be lovely with some midcentury art and sculpture, or photographs on it. A mirrored wall with or without art or sculpture would also work with midcentury. These treatments are easier to adapt should you wish to change the look slightly from time to time. I would suggest replacing your stairrail with chrome or acrylic if that is in the budget...see how well the loveseat frame looks with the fabric? Comments (40)We got the IKEA shelves that are pictured in the butlers pantry photo I posted when we were on holiday in Melbourne, Australia. We don't have IKEA here in New Zealand! Hubby is going back over in May/June so will get him to get more of that sort of thing when there. We would pay about 4x the price for that sort of thing here in NZ. Comments (7)Thanks :) Yeah decided to go with tile. So sand cement is ok over existing tiles if I prep them first? Only problem is, the new pad can only be about 30mm at it's thickest (leaving up to 15mm for tiles) otherwise it'll end up being higher than the hallway floor. So I either need to make the fall shallower or not bother with the waste and make it all level. If I made it level, could I use levelling compound at that thickness or would deck mud/sand cement be the best option? Also, should I be putting in mesh for strength? (I know I should (and will) ask the local hardware what they suggest, but it's great to have suggestions from the Houzz community also)...See MoreRoo

This floor can still be restored. Lithofin have a range of chemicals to remove adhesives, cement etc. They have an excellent technical dept should you wish to make an enquiry.
I just restored a similar floor for a friend over the weekend.
