laundry tiles ?

Question is: Follow the concrete floor tiles thru to the laundry 600x 600 from the rest of the house with a aluminium division between the hallway and laundry or go the bathroom 300x 600 tiles?

White below cabinets, black over, Calcutta benchtop. Herringbone white / white grout splashback. I thought builder wasn’t putting an aluminium strip between hallway tiles and laundry but he said it’s required. :(

I think either will work, Jo. I guess I would take into consideration the size of the room and the amount of natural light streaming in through window or door. I have had both and honestly, the lighter coloured floor and more natural light suits me better. BTW, Lovely material selections!

I would suggest you take out the cabinet that is to the right of the stove and use it elsewhere in the house -- perhaps in the bathroom or dining room with a hutch above it. Then, I would suggest you have someone install a lazy susan cabinet in the corner between the sink counter and the stove, meaning you would move the stove down a bit and have a small cabinet/counter top to the right of the stove. I would suggest you have the cabinets refinished in white and then paint the walls a pastel you like. If you would prefer white walls, then add white-painted crown molding and paint the ceiling a light neutral blue, such as Sherwin Williams Niagara Falls Blue. Then, I would suggest you choose a favorite accent color and use this sparingly in accessories like towels, pot holders, small vases or floral arrangements, and a valence above the triple windows. For a genuine 1940s look, you might have white ceramic square tiles with a rectangular red border installed as a back splash behind and above the stove. If you are replacing counter tops, I would suggest a light color such as white with a beige or light grey vein or striation for some sort of pattern. You might be able to find the same color and design in floor tile OR opt for a wood floor as another poster suggested.

Could you put the laundry behind doors so that you won't see it with the walk through...by the way...I am just over the water in OZ, know what you mean by costs... will get some pics....this would be my option...just going on what you are saying.... The good thing about this is that you can shut the laundry away except for when you are washing...... I would have the washer with the dryer next to it if you can and put a bench over the top of the both of them....for this it is worth getting a front loader if you haven't already got one.. this will avoid the bench on the other side...it can all be contained and done on the one side of the laundry. Don't go for sliding doors ...the glass look great but they will need a bottom track and if they don't have one...they will move a lot....not great for this even though they look great. As for having the bench over the top of the washer and dryer, you can then have overhead shelving, does not need to be cupboards as the bifolds will hide what is in there...double cost other wise. hope this helps...Robyn

Hello Marcelle, I am an interior designer . I can tell you a simple inexpensive way to change the look of your kitchen. Looking at the photo you sent the different cabinet heights , and all the objects on the stove wall are very busy . Your modern house is wanting a cleaner , simple look. I would lower the small cabinets so that the top is at the same height as the others in the room. And put doors on , that will hide the clutter. Next I would do a tile backsplash above the stove , up to the same height. The whole kitchen will be pulled together by the continuous top line. There is a small light wood cabinet with baskets in the foreground . I would paint it white , or the same dark accent color of the cabinets you have. I don't think you would need to change the beams then , they would add interest and drama once everything else was subdued. Lisa

after watching my daughter and her husband agonize over the way their expensive timber floor has not held up well after 3 years, I would recommend tiles/wood look tiles with under heating. Their beautiful warm expensive floor looks like it always needs a clean and polish, not from neglect, they have cared for it well. One of the boards now has a slight and painful moan when it's stepped on :-( I grew up in a completely wood floor home and although it looked wonderful, my Mother hated it. ....and the mats ! Wood is a lot harder to maintain than tiles ,(no matter what the die hards say) the modern wood finishes are much better than they used to be.... But a piece of wood is rather arty no matter what it's used for and it does demand to be loved and cared for.....and if something goes wrong it's a lot more expensive to fix than sand and cement. Ultimately you have to be happy. BTW underheating tiles is warmer than timber :-)

Jo, perhaps question your builder why an aluminium strip is required. Generally, to my knowledge, the strip is used when transitioning between two different types of flooring, and/or for expansion and contraction. IF the exact same material is used for both rooms and the sub-floor is the same material, then I'm not sure why a strip is necessary, hence ask your builder to explain his reasoning. I'd be interested to hear what you find out. Cheers.

Your builder may be confused with the requirements for floor wastes in an apartment laundry so that any overflow doesn't seep through to the apartment below. An aluminium strip at the door threshold in this case would mean that any overflow would not run into the rest of the residence, and the water would go down the floor waste.

While it may be prudent to have a laundry floor waste, and an aluminium strip at the internal door threshold to contain any overflow, it is not a requirement of the building regulations for a standard house.

So is Jo Louise in a standard house that doesn't have somebody else's home below the laundry? Is there a floor waste in the laundry?

If there is no requirement for the aluminium strip I would go with the same tiles that are in the hallway, and live with the risk that there will be an overflow.

This is toilet and bathroom.. will be the same for the laundry as off today.
Single toilet tiles is changed as I wanted the tile line in the centre. Mmmm not sure.. what’s done is done now. All have floor wastes plus aluminium between both tiles to the hall way.
