Pool Help Needed! Come pick my tile.
So, we need help! I feel in love with a spa design using Arto Brick conche tiles (fish scale/mermaid tile- see attached picture) in a white color that changes in the light that has a modern look that is a tad... rustic (can’t think of a better word to describe). It’s unique and amazing. But, I’m planning on using it for the focal center wall and the elevated bench wall (see attached picture of our layout). We will have a lot of cement similar to the spa picture attached but need to find a tile for our waterline and our spa. HELP!
I think it may be best to stay with the Arto Brick line to keep with the unique look that their tile brings but I don’t think I want more conche. I was thinking about the little squares or even a subway type but confused if it will look good with the conche and also debating if I bring in colors. This is seriously much harder than I ever imagined. They have great cement tile patterns, but they won’t work in the pool. Only their ceramics. I’m beyond confused and would love feedback and opinions.
A lot of our decor will be black and white and grey. I do love pattern and color. But I also like simple. I’m attaching a picture of another pool that used the Arto tile in the small squares. If I do that, I would maybe do light greens and blues and even some grey to go with the water pool theme.
Y’all want to pick my coping and pavers too??!!!

Comments (8)You have done a beautiful job of tucking plants into the crevices of your retaining walls. Your house trim color is perfect -- just slightly lighter in hue than the retaining wall blocks. First I would paint the big, flat gray wall slightly lighter than the blocks and slightly darker than the house trim. The concrete walk and stairs I would stain a mottled blend of the blocks and the house trim colors. Next would be to paint the railing black or the house body color. Now, think of the following as creating a light, airy trellise structure from the walk-level face of the (currently gray) wall to about 7' above the top of the wall (using 6x6" posts attached to the wall) with a corresponding line of posts sunk into the terrace level 2' in from the outside edge of the wall-attached posts. The inside posts would be about 6-8" higher than the outside posts. Put 4x4" wood to attach the outside line of posts to each other and do the same with the inside line of posts. Run wood pieces at the top of the two lines of posts from the inside line to the outside line at about a 45 degree angle. They would be cantilevered up at the terrace level. Across the top of the angled pieces create your top trellise boards which run parallel to the two lines of posts. OK. There you have your basic structure. You might want to extend the structure around to follow the street side of the terrace. You could then follow the suggestion of reom10 above about creating a bench-planter on the terrace side. Your spacing of the boards parallel to the gray wall and attached to the outside posts would determine how private you wanted your terrace to be. You might want to soften the terrace "floor" by using something irregular like flagstone with groundcover plantings between the stones. From the latticework on top of your structure you could hang seasonal flower baskets. Plant vines to go up the trellis and spill down the wall. How about planting a row of tall, narrow shrubs along the neighbor's fence above your terrace to help add to your privacy and make your yard feel less 'structured'? You could simulate a color change on door by hanging something over the door that is the color like a tablecloth or piece of fabric. Comments (93)Oh, okay, may need to clarify some more. If you get a new 2 seater in place of the 2 white chairs, fine, but no blue chair at all next to the 'new' 2 seater. Won't be right with a blue chair too. So what ones are you planning to recover?. If getting rid of part of it, not understanding. 2 different styles placed next to each other won't look right. I wouldn't like old blue fabrics next to new fabrics or next to 2 different styles of furniture. Comments (14)We have a 900x900 shower and it's plenty big enough. Neither of your proposed layouts looks that great, to be perfectly honest, sorry! In the first layout, you could improve it quite a lot by swapping the toilet and vanity (centre the toilet under the window on the bottom right of the picture if possible), and having the shower door on the other wall (beside the door). Then, you could have a towel rail on the wall beside the door (i.e. behind the door when it's open), which would be accessible from the shower but hidden when the door was open. An 800x1200 shower might be a good size for your space. You'd have to choose a toilet that doesn't protrude too far, plus a narrow vanity. With that layout, you could have a long but narrow wall-hung vanity, with a big mirror covering the wall between the windows, which would make the room feel bigger and would give a good amount of storage. 3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoI believe they are just 2x2 Arto tile (sorry this should be 3x3 Arto- you want to accommodate the 6inch waterline) . They have LOTS of colors and can also make custom colors. I would call Steve and Pathways Melrose and ask if he knows the colors. He’s an expert and only sells 2 or 3 brands. Here is more details.

3 years agoAmazing! We ended up going with Heath tile for the pool in a blue color. Each one is hand painted (Like Arto) so the color is different and unique. I decided to go towards Heath because it’s a more modern look than rustic and I got the tiles for a steal on their sample sale. I wish a could upload better pictures but the quality on houzz doesn’t come out well for me when I download. I will try to post a couple of pictures of upclose. I did buy Arto for the above on a bench. I did an owner build, so there was a lot of love and late night Instagram looking for ideas. Arto and Heath were my very favorite tile companies.

3 years agoI looked at artistic pavers, many of my favorite designers used them and also concrete collaboration. But I ended up using Stepstone for my pavers, pool coping, and steps. Stepstone is also sold by Pathway Melrose and it was a great price (the style was great and the price was what we needed). We’ve been very happy. great quality. There were some issues with the coping when delivered and they completely came to the house to fix the situation (Steve helped to handle the whole situation and was SO awesome about it). Tomorrow I can try and take some. Here is a quick photo showing the custom curve we were able to get for coping. I will try to take some updates photos tomorrow

3 years agoNiki- make sure that you double check that the color you like is rated for pools (they have a list). And if you can get about 6 pieces of the color to see the variation, id recommend it. Green looks AMAZING in pools. i wanted green or white. Blue came because of the price, I needed a ton of tile for the bond beam so I only had 2 options. I’m happy with it though. It’s very pretty. The other tile I used in my yard was a black and white from Arto. I have a built in bench above the pool where I added the tile. It’s a weird combo that just sorta works. We are now planting and finishing up the bench. Hope to one day be done to post pictures of the whole yard. We also did a fire pit area and a large
outdoor bar. I posted some video and pictures on an Instagram account named “decoratingbynumbers”.
