Front Entry Door

We currently have a standard sized wooden front door with a vertical glass pane either side of door. Would like to replace with a wider front door with a security screen, although most wider front doors never seem to include the latter, probably because it takes away from the door design? We always have the front door open given we have a front security screen door. Has anyone included a "crim safe" type security screen with the wider, more modern front doors?

Crimsafe style doors are custom made for each door that they are fitted to. However you would need to check with the manufacturer about the maximum width that they could make one. I would anticipate that the wider the door the easier it is to force out the middle screen.

If you are going with a pivot style door (like in this photo), that doesn't have hinges then you can't have a security door working with it.

If you are replacing your current front door and two sidelight windows with a single wide front door then you will need to have a new timber door frame made to support the extra weight, and be extra sure that when the door swings open it doesn't hit an internal wall!

There are many options for changing the look of your house. I would replace the windows with larger windows. You can put in tall windows and keep the same width. This doesn't require any structural changes. If you widen the windows you will need a structual analysis. However, if you want to really change the look, you could widen the openings and put in french doors on each side with a new balcony for each, or a balcony across the front. The balcony can be very shallow 6" or deep enough for a chair. It can be cantelevered. I would go for a contemporary look. I found some images to share for inspiration. If you decide to make the changes, I suggest that you hire a local Architect to help you acheive something really nice..........Your house has a lot of potential.

Thanks for the extra pics. Still thinking along the same line. Trim the bushes by the sidewalk to make the sidewalk more visible and accessible. If you can, replace the package with new door with clear glass or no glass and new sidelights or none. Put in a courtyard that comes out to the white wall with whatever works for you. Pavers, pavers and gravel, low decking, concrete, tile, brick. Anything. Add bench , chairs , mini trees in pots flowers. Make it welcoming. Could even add a trellis over the area. Deck could be made smaller and planting beds put in under Windows for small shrubs or flowers. Grass in the area between the ac unit and the driveway. Add a walk way from drive to the deck in material that works withe the rest. I would add pictures but don't know how.

We have very similar narrow side gardens. Judging from your picture, I'm guessing that you get more sun on the left. So, close to the door you could have pots of varying sizes and similar colour with dark leaf cannas and contrasting agaves potted, which won't overtake your garden because of the pot restriction. On the shade side, I'd plant ferns at intervals with clivia inbetween. You could also put up some chicken wire on the fence and train jasmine. On the sunny side, cordyline show-off, vireya rhodos, hibiscus (beautiful varieties) and bromeliads for groundcover. Good luck and have fun.

Hello all ! Have recently pulled out front garden which was very dull , thinking of replacing with white lime chip and some nice greenery to liven the place up. Problem I see and I’m sure you all see , is the front is such a grey slab , I don’t really want to go painting the whole thing at this stage so after some simple solutions to change it up. Paint window sills ? Paint gutter ? Replace front door ? The other part of house is a weather/composite board same colour to the slats in the fence and gate. Any advice is much appreciated !
