Old House... New Color? Painted Brick?
We just bought a new old house, and the outside definitely needs something... a refresh... I've gone through all the discussions on here and still can't quite figure out what we should do. My wife feels that we should paint the house all one color (brick and siding). She likes all grey with white trim. I'm still on the fence on wether to paint the brick, but i will say that at least 5 houses on the block have their bricks painted over, so our home wouldn't be out of place if we went that route. So should we paint the brick?
The bushes are definitely overgrown, my wife wants to just trim them down to half the size, but everything i read says that these bushes, Arborvitae, can't just be trimmed down that low. So should we just remove them and replant something else in their place?
The garage door is being replaced, any suggestions on what color we should paint it? I think the same color we choose for the shutters
Any design help from this community we be greatly appreciated...

Comments (3)I reall like the current colors and your red roof. I think you can change the house colors and not change the fence color. Here is one example that is in a tan family: With a white trim and dark brown shutters, I think it would work. Comments (40)Tess, I hope I'm not too late with the following advice. Don't ever paint brick. Your house is a simple design, exterior wise. Paint wont fix it. What's missing is a designed garden. Even the simplest brick house can look like an inviting, lived in home when it has a structured garden surrounding it. For less than the price of paint, invest in a landscaper to design a garden that will soften and greatly enhance your homes street appeal ...and add many $ in value. Painted brick detracts from value and has to be repainted periodically, defeating the purpose of brick, which is, no maintenance. Besides, your house, painted white or cream as has been suggested here, would stand out in the street like a proverbial sore thumb. I am unsure which colour to paint the front door, the wooden has an ugly stained brownish colour, happy to sand or to paint, but mental block about colour - grey/black or white? 2. Thinking about recladding the bricks with horizontal wooden slates as per last pic.Is that a good idea? Not suited? Friends say too expansive here in NZ but i am happy to pay if it will suit the house. 3.Shall we put a deck in front of the french door connecting the entrance, which I would then cover with wood as well to get rid of the concrete. Too much wood? 4 years agoI agree with your wife! Paint the bricks and siding all one color. That will look very nice. But I would go very light with just the slightest wisp of grey in it. The result will be vert classy. (Attaching a picture of one of our projects. We always go light - the whiter the better!)
