Is Neat better than Mess for efficiency?

I think people sometimes confuse neatness with efficiency and organisation.

Whatever method you have for storing your stuff, as long as you can find it quickly, it's in good condition when you get it and it doesn't take long to put away- the rest is just aesthetics.

Some people love everything in perfect rows but that sometimes takes longer to do.

Sometimes people who like the neat rows frown on their partner's mess or perceived dis-order

So don't judge organisation based on appearance, if it works for that person, it's quite possibly perfect.

If you like neat little rows, you're willing to invest the extra time to get your preferred aesthetic.

For this reason, I often design each person's space quite differently , then everyone can go about their life their way.

Nothing will affect the feel of your house as much as the quality of the light. If you can at all swing it, keep your divided lights. Looking at your photo, those windows are gorgeous. Can you place glass on the exterior? I have some lead light windows in 2 locations. I made new frames with the leaded old glass on the inside and plain glass on the outside. While not as weather-tight, it's much better than single glass. While not as neat as your present windows, the new windows that have the interior and exterior lights with the spacers between the glass also look great and are at the present standards for energy efficient. We live in the PNW and used Milgard; less expensive than Anderson and Marvin, but so far I'm very happy with them.

Thanks for posting new views of your room. You are right, nothing can go in front of the paneling, and we won't block the built-in cubby. In that case let's work with the rest of the space. I found a picture on Houzz for your gallery wall. I think this will allow you to bring in color and texture and interest to your wall without taking up space like furniture would. Try to play with portraits and a couple of paintings in there too - mix it up. Otherwise I would not put anything at the top of that landing (I'd remove that console table). That picture wall should be enough visual interest to your space and it'll draw the eye to the furthest wall as you walk in your house. I would try a small piece with closed storage between the bottom steps and that door by the entry. It looks like the space is no wider than 26", so it'll be a challenge to find something that fits and is tall enough. I would not use the wooden piece you showed above because you want wider proportions and fairly narrow depth so you don't bump into it as you walk by. (something like this ) I would hang a mirror on top of primping. By the cubby you could add a single seat stool. I'm not particularly suggesting these colors for the stool and bombe chest but something along these shapes. At this point if you do that big picture wall and add these two pieces of furniture and a mirror, you might not need to hang anything on the wall above the cubby. Also, I noticed your chandelier is quite substantial for the space and hanging pretty low. Would raising it a little or replacing it by something a little smaller be an option?

I think it is awesome to give a piece of furniture a new life. It is sometimes a bit daunting to take a paint brush to a piece made from genuine old timber but if you are going to get many more years of life and enjoyment out of it I think it is better than dumping it. I believe it shows your love. jbof4 I started with a heat gun to remove most of the many layers of paint, (some are easier than others to strip this way). Then I used an orbital sander and sanded and sanded and sanded. You might also try liquid paint stripper although I find this very messy. I believe you can also get them professionally stripped. Good luck with the resurrection, go for it what have you got to lose.

Hi CCC,

I personally think the answer to your question will largely depend on the vintage of the person who lives in the room.

For instance, both my children (21 and 23 yo) have BIR. In spite of these facilities they mostly prefer the horizontal wardrobe of the floor in their bedrooms, the vanity and floor of the bathroom they share or in fact any room they inhabit for more than 10 minutes. This proves to be very efficient for them on the way in; i.e. the point when they disrobe and leave their clothing, their shoes or their whatever, where ever it is removed. Far less efficient for my wife who hates seeing their clothing being used as a wall-to-wall carpet substitute and who therefore will from time to time picks up these items. Then on the way out (generally a few minutes before the Uber is due to arrive to take them out) it is particularly inefficient when son or daughter need to find a specific item of clothing and decide that finding say item is the responsibility of every family member.

What I need is efficiency between the washing machine and the wardrobe; those items I need that are clean but not yet pressed and returned to my robe. Usually ends with all washing on floor while I look for the item I'm after. So my understand is good laundry storage.

Clearly a slow Friday afternoon.

Hey sourcecorp! Love the Friday arvo comment!! I get it. Agree the laundry is the pivot point. Your kids are benefiting from only the first part of the equation. In order to decide what’s efficient you have to factor in the entire cycle. Your wife is doing the uphill while the kids Coast. Love the I stand honesty. I completely believe this is extremely normal.
