help with old overwhelming parquetry floors
I would like some ideas on our old parquetry floors please.
We have just moved into our first ever home and need some help with the floors, wall colour, window coverings, kitchen colours and layout.
The most overwhelming thing for us is the old parquetry floor. It is in the kitchen, dining, walk in pantry, entrance and linen Cupboard.
As you can see it is very motley and needs to be subtled down, by evening out the colours if possible. Or should be just laminate over it. Seems a shame after all the work and expense in laying it originally.
The parquetry meets up with tiles in the living, bedroom hallway and tv rooms.
The place needs a paint (what colours?) and the salmon curtains need to be changed (to what?)
We are in a very limited budget. But I’m sure we could modernise the place with some wall paint in good colour choice, perhaps rugs, soft sheer curtains. But what do we do about the floor.
I’m thinking about painting the kitchen too as we can’t afford s new kitchen. Again what colours?
What would you suggest? We are open to any suggestions.
Pricing?
Thanks very much

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agocould be gorgeous if you dull down everything else.. but always depends on budget and long term plans...would be interesting to see if the floors continue under the cabinets but if they're in good condition focus on new wall paint, paint the kitchen cabinets and add new handles and curtains in off white tones ..if the curtains have light coloured linings you hang the curtains back to front to give you an idea of how the lighter colours would lift the rooms until the pink can be replaced (recycle separate good condition liners) and add some indoor plants and artworks with green/blue/greys to tone with your furniture which looks good with the floor although a wide plain rug under the table would also help

4 years agoI think Louise's ideas are good, but you could also take a photo into a flooring specialist shop that also does refinishing, and ssk their advice. I think part of the "overwhelm" is that they are so glossy.

4 years agoWork with that amazing floor, as Oklouise mentioned it needs de glossing, get a pro to re sand and finish with a matt or low sheen this will make a big difference. Keeping the walls a soft colour or just white. Check out Spotlight for sales on window treatments, curtains and blinds. If in doubt about colour of these I find it easy to match curtains to walls.
The kitchen cupboards can be painted succesfully, speak to a good paint store in your area, I find "Inspirations" excellent. Love your table and chairs

4 years agoThis type of flooring is often seen in older arpartments in Europe and they sometimes make it look very cool, so perhaps worth googling some images for inspiration.

4 years agoThis isn't parquetry but is multi coloured timber flooring and look how beautiful it looks with the new colour scheme

The parquetry floor is growing on me. Just not sure how to blend it in with the harsh beige coloured tiles.I’m thinking it might look better if I laminate over the entire floor, ie over the wooden parquetry and adjoining tiles. Might make the place look more seamless.
But what a shame about the quality parquetry floors.siriuskey
4 years agoI think you would regret doing that, you could remove the old tiles that show their age set on a diagonal with a border which clashes with the timber. Plain square set tiles, carpet or timber flooring would work better

4 years agoI agree with the other comments to sand the floor and use a matt finish and they will look great. I would also add some natural rugs like a sisal or a jute to tone down the pattern of the floor. If you are on a budget you could try Bunnings or Ikea for some rugs. Hope this helps.

4 years agoThere are 2 homes with parquet in the current House and Garden magazine and one in Inside out- they look great. I would do as Jemden suggests and also consider having the tiles resurfaced so they are all grey if new tiles are over the budget.

4 years agoDo you need to have curtains ? If you do maybe just sheers .Put a blockout blind on the window facing your TV . When you paint make sure that the skirtings and architraves are white . Change the wall tiles in the kitchen and after painting the cupboards , add new handles. I think after doing all that including the neutral dining rug that you may find that your lounge tiles look okay . If you still aren’t happy ,then you can replace them when you can afford it . I think the floorings are done last .

Original Author4 years ago<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><md>Yes I definitely need curtains and am wanting to go sheer. Just waiting for summer to come in force to see if blockouts are required. I’m also wanting to paint the skirtings and architraves white. Do you think that the window sills should also be white? And what about wall colours? I was thinking of having a feature wall in a light steel gray colour or should I just keep everything white?
Thanks for your help guys.
