cladding over brick creates challenges around windows and doors so unless there's a structural problem with the bricks and they have to be covered over i suggest that painting the bricks would complement the cottage look and be much easier and cheaper than more cladding although another option could be to paint the bricks and reclad the garage with smooth cladding and i wonder if painting the garage a darker colour and the house a lighter shade of the same colour would also help balance the look of the different walls

To me, It makes no sense cladding over bricks for aesthetic purposes. Would you consider rendering the brick or even just painting white for a cottage effect? Also, could faux exterior shutters add the look you are after? Keep the house and garage colours fresh and crisp and save the autumnal look for plant pots and foliage (sacred bamboo is autumnal all year round).

A cottage look can be achieved without the need to clad. You could render and paint. The cottage look can be achieved by breaking up the facade with a balustrade to the verandah.
