Greys aren’t best friends with red. Do you have other options? Night sky windows look good. Don’t forget that you’ll have the black frames inside the house as well so consider both interior and exterior together.

I'd never personally have a dark roof in most of Australia, because it absorbs so much heat. So I'd go with the surfmist roof; but with a dark garage door, matching your windows. The darker colour will make it recede visually a bit; and let your attention go to the rest of the house.

Agree with Michelle - I'd have a surfmist roof and dark garage door - same colour door as your joinery.

And something a bit the opposite that I am thinking of. Even though I do like red brick, I think a lighter brick could work well against the large number of black windows we are going to have, a little bit like the house that follows (which is the same facade, just not as wide). Does this work? Maybe a different portico colour?

Regarding timber doors, we want to go with black aluminium windows rather than timber, so I'm not sure a timber garage door would match. Unless we did the front door in timber to match the garage door perhaps?

I couldn't see the entrance door , so I didn't comment on it -- I may be wrong , but it looks like it may have 3 or 4 square windows down either side , in the black joinery ? A timber entrance door and garage door , with the glass 'highlights' and dark joinery would look really smart IMO -- not so much so if you did a browner timber , but with a red tone ( like cedar ) or even both in a lighter oak or similar , would look great , again just my opinion .

Dark 'fake' doors ( both the entrance and the garage ) would also work , but mainly because they just meld in and you don't really see them -- personally I prefer features that add to a design , not just meld in , but each to their own .

My personal favourite is the night sky garage door, the surfmist roof, and the redbrick. I think it's pretty timeless too.
I like the paler driveway; partly because the kids and I go mostly barefoot in Summer, and a paler drive is kinder to the feet!

I'm currently exploring a different direction, just wondering people's thoughts on these options (Grey or brick and night sky). We live in Melbourne and will have upgraded insulation plus anticon, so not too worried about the black roof and heat.

I'm starting to like the appearance of two colours only rather than three. Window shutters will be white to add some extra colour.

Option 1 - grey/black

Option 2 - grey/black/white

Option 3 - red / black (Hawthorn red bricks)

Option 4 red/black (Chapel red bricks)

I like option 1. It’s plain but I’d couple to with a very lush green garden.

IMO none of the brick colours suit the roof , or alternatively the roof colour doesn't suit the bricks . As bigreader says , it is plain ( I'd say corporate/boring -- imagine this as a small accountants office ! ) , and open any or all of those pictures and have a look -- the most notable thing is the block wall in the garden , so that tells you there is a problem !

Faced with that , I'd investigate a brick or block similar to that sandstone block wall colour , combine it with a cedar garage door and entrance door , a charcoal tile on the terrace , and go with a greener shade of the roof paint -- almost a dark khaki . More interesting in a good way , IMO .

It’s all a personal choice. I love hawthorn bricks and hav a dislike of the paler or grey brick colours. . A bit of black in the brick gives variation and ties in with the black elsewhere. Add a vibrant colour to the front door to offset all the dark colours, Or timber

I think colour schemes are (and should be) very much about personal taste more than current trends and "professional opinions". If it we're the latter all houses would look the same!

If you like it, go for it. You're the one that will be living with it for years.

The important part is that you keep trialling colour combinations and surface textures (and maybe additional snippets of structural architecture) until you find something that really resonates with you (and your cohabitants).

Spend the time BEFORE you commit to building. There's tonnes of tools/websites available for visualising combinations, so there's no excuse for rushing this process.
