Plant vines v render to cool house?

I am wondering if planting vines on a trellis along the western side of a brick house would be an effective way of cooling the house in summer? Or whether rendering or painting the wall in a light colour would be better? There is not enough room along the side to plant trees, which is why I am thinking vines could be an option (like star jasmine on a trellis perhaps, but not Boston Ivy that sticks to bricks and can damage the house). Has anyone done this and what are the pros/cons? Alternatively render could be an option for cooling, but I am wary of the cost and ongoing maintenance. Any advice greatly appreciated.
