Do you want to keep the toilet separate to the shower room??

To get a decent vanity I think we have to. The current space is so awkward for more then one person at a time.

I'd combine the rooms to get more space and knock back as much of the diving wall as possible so you could pivot the vanity 90 degrees against back wall.

My other thought is: you mention being a retired couple and you seem to have a lot of bedrooms. If it was me I'd combine those 2 bedrooms into a grand suite with bedroom,  dressing room,  ensuite and powder room for visitors.

But that may be beyond the pale!

Sorry ignore that.  I was thinking there was another bedroom but got confused!

Yes it would be nice but budget doesn’t allow for it. And the grandkids might have something to say about it as well. But we can dream!!!!

My suggestion

I have a pet hate of separate toilet with no basin so Id pull out wall dividing for better mobility space. By rotating vanity you can have mirror cabinetry above vanity

Thanks Kate and dreamer I like both ideas but worry about the door opening onto the toilet. So much space. Looks much more practical.

If you combine the toilet/bathroom as suggested,  the door is actually further from the toilet than before which is a positive.

Is the house on concrete slab or stumps?

As long as it's not a concrete slab and you're doing a full bathroom Reno, I would move the toilet

If a bath is something you'd like, that would fit

Would having a toilet in the bathroom be a negative thing either for yourselves or when there are people visiting on a normal day, not guests staying in the downstairs room. You can’t be in the shower/brush your teeth if a someone is using the toilet. Or visa versa. Would it be an inconvenience to have to use the private toilet downstairs? Only you know the answers to these questions. But the answers will help design the outcome you are after.

That's exactly what I had drawn up yesterday and didn't remember to post. Two things to think about with the space is the length and depth of the vanity and the old doorway wall to make sure you leave enough space between. I think you will need to work with a single basin and a 450 wall hung vanity to allow enough space

This with dimensions rounded, I found that some of the dimensions didn't work for me

Thanks Siriuskey we are aware of that but we have the ability to move the toilet wall back into the hallway by about 100mm if need be to make it work. The vanity we are looking at is 500mm wide so should be ok. It’s such an awkward space, don’t know what they were thinking when they built it. It will be a bit of trial an error once we demo the wall as to the final position of the door. But that’s the fun of doing it yourselves.

Will you be doing anything with the windows as they don't match

Don’t know yet until we do the demo. Might be able to disguise it by moving my hanging plant in between, closer to the toilet window.

To future proof this for you, I'd spend the extra if you can to switch the toilet and vanity. That way you can get the 860mm wide door you need for wheelchair access into the room and also eliminate the tightness between the door wall and vanity in the position you have it.

The vanity can be a generous 1500mm long with no compromises. By doing this too, you could possibly add a little to the shower. 800mm is not very wide, even though it is quite long. If you ever need to have someone sitting in the shower with someone else helping, 900mm plus is always good.

Have the door swing into the room because having it swing into the hallway will make access awkward for a wheelchair. Cavity sliders aren't great for bathrooms, both from a privacy point of view and rigidity for the wall for fixing fixtures to or running services in.

Thanks Christine. You make some valid points I hadn’t thought of. We wanted to use a cavity slider because currently the door opens onto the shower area and it is quite awkward. But will certainly take it into consideration. Thank you.
