Victorian terrace transformation in Sydney

We were tasked to design and renovate a tricky little Victorian Terrace property in the heart of Erskineville.

The original space was incredibly dated, had terrible damp issues and also had an unfavorable floor plan that was incredibly impractical. You can see below that the original bathroom and laundry were located at the rear of the property and were so small they were almost unusable. The kitchen was located in the center of the property and was again, small with limited storage.

The back portion of the house was also split on 2 levels with a step down from the kitchen/dining room to what can only be described as a conservatory style space with sliding doors leading out onto the pathway running along the side of the property. We set about reworking the floorplan first by removing the internal walls and levelling the floors and then by reconfiguring the position of both the kitchen and the bathroom.

By moving the kitchen to the rear of the property and repositioning the bathroom where the old kitchen used to be, we were able to create a lovely flow through from the front entrance right to the rear deck through some newly appointed patio doors.

We included a Euro style laundry in the kitchen area for practicality while allowing the space to be closed off completely when not in use.

Due to the narrow nature of the property we needed to be creative with our use of built-in furniture and furnishings. For this reason we opted to include banquette seating on one side of the dining table which created a clear path through the dining space to the kitchen that didn't impede movement. This also connected the kitchen with the dining room and the newly appointed office and bookcase which was purposefully included to house our clients extensive book collection.

The new bathroom was built from the ground up and although compact we were able to create a functional space that catered for our clients needs. We created privacy by lifting the window higher up the wall and drew in more natural light with the addition of a skylight above the bath/shower. This also creates a beautiful view of the nights sky when lying and relaxing in the bath.

Each of the 2 bedrooms were fitted out with new built in wardrobes to maximise the space and create some really functional storage solutions.

Erskineville is a lovely suburb where it is nice to see old homes (however challenging) preserved and updated. What an awesome job with clever design to make the most out of the space, even managing to fit in a bath where you can star gaze.

Thanks Anna, the skylight above the bath is actually one of my favourite features within the space.
