Found some damp - what to do next?

Hi everyone - we moved some furniture and discovered a damp wall + mould. What are probable causes and what should we do next?

It's a north-facing wall, 5th floor, with a balcony outside as well. I'm wondering whether it could have come through the wall? There has also been some condensation on the window and balcony door, could this be the cause?

Any advice much appreciated, not sure how to fix this.

With the location behind the furniture, condensation could be the cause - in which case the Houzz article has some good advice.

However, it's always good to eliminate the possibility of water penetration through the wall first as that won't go away on its own. If you can see the equivalent area from outside, look for cracks, plant growth/ green staining, leaking pipework/ gutters, or joins (e.g. between the balcony floor and wall) where water could get in and then engage a suitable builder to come and look.

I'm quite lucky that we have quite a large bathroom for over here. There all normally so small in older homes! I have a a lot of space to fill and was only going to use the tiles in the bath and on the floor. I find fully tiled bathrooms very very confining. White wall for the rest, apparently, according to the design guru. But it's ok, I've been told when it comes time to decorate the garage I can have whatever I want!!!!

I would make a wine bottle holder - not sure of the size of pictured objects but the blue one with with hole could be the base of it. I would do a web search for wine bottle holders and look at the images, lots of crazy/cool stuff out there. Or a hamster agility course (again depends on size) :) there are some really funny hamster/mouse agility videos out there.

Hi anne, that's what I was originally thinking, my issue is what colour I use for the 'pop' :) I keep coming back to a teal/turquoise colour (it's one of my favourite colours!!), I love blues, purples, teal/turquoise - many on here have suggested yellow but I'm really not sure about it. Here in New Zealand we're in Autumn, nearing Winter so uncertain about the yellow. I found these cushions that I've fallen in love it, and wondering how I could make these work.. do I try teal and mustard together, as an interior designer suggested?

Sophisticated start. You could go with black and white photography, architectural pieces, art pieces- anything you love on the wall. Then, add pillows in the colors of the art work. If you want to stay more monochromatic, think in terms of textural interest, such as a shag area rug, pillows with seam detailing, etc.
