Renovating a living room... need help
Hi,
Im looking to have our floorboards redone and then purchase a new couch, TV unit coffee table etc. Initially I thought I wanted to a darker couch, we have young kids and currently the cream is always grotty. But I think dark might be too much for this space.
Here is a photo of the space (this was previous owners furniture). We have our TV hanging on the wall where the couch is, and where their TV is, a 2 seater couch so we turned to rotation of the room around.

Comments (8)Mona you have seen exactly the dilemmas I'm facing with this room so I really appreciate your comments. I was focusing on no1, but really 2 and 3 are on my mind too. In terms of getting some continuity between the rooms I was planning on recovering the dining chairs in a fabric to tone with cushions/throws on the white couch, ottomans in a matching tone, and pulling this colour scheme through into cushions in the formal lounge. I love the spring colours at the moment (greens, blues etc) which you can see i'm playing with at the moment but you might be able to see the painting in the formal room which is orange, red and yellow with a blue/purple base. So I'm very keen on colour and so tired of the brown carpet and neutral walls. I was also going to restain the dining table and chairs to a dark mahogany colour, and change the bar stools to something more modern. re: rug closer to sofa, I've done this and it looks off-balance with nothing else in the space. It seems to work better in the middle of the carpet area at the moment. Perhaps thats because I haven't ordered the ottomans yet. I don't want to add a coffee table to this room as prefer Ottoman to put feet up on. I've attached a pic of a rug, do you think something like this would work better? re the wall: yes this is the major for me at the moment. It is a TV room so tv and speakers stay and I wont be adding any custom cabinetry. The idea was to increase the space in this room by removing all of the cabinets and they are now in the adjoining room. The speaker covers have not been painted as I needed to work out what wall covering to apply, and colour etc. so once they are painted the wall colour they will blend in better. Comments (5)A few simple steps can give your room a lot more vibe! Try pairing the drapes with sheer curtains, that will give the window more depth. The tv wall could be your accent wall, a dark blue would actually work very well. If the TV has backing, I would hang it on the wall, a few inches above the furniture piece. The two frames above the white dresser should go below the wall clock. Instead, a large art piece (about the length of the dresser) would complement that wall much better. I would also replace the coffee table with a rectangular, heavier glass and metal table, placed in the center. Also pillows. Pick up colors from your art work and the accent wall and use those to find pillows to decorate your sofas. Hope this inspires :-)...See MoreHelp with the living room please

11 months agoJust thinking this could be really comfortable in that beautiful room, an sectional sofa that you could incorporate with an ottoman, a comfortable chair , a little larger to accommodate a couple by the fireplace , then how’s this for comfort, choose either leather or a stain free fabric for easy care.

11 months agoHow about a slip cover sofa, then you could have a lighter colour, but with washable covers (some are only dry cleanable) you don’t need to worry about the kids making a mess

9 months agoPlush has these curved lounges. You could get 2 & form a semi arch affect. I love leather for ease of care & comfort. You can wash with a wool wash solution & condition regularly.

9 months agoWhen it comes to kids, leather is such a great option, but I agree the sofa is very dark for the space, I would consider a dark chocolate leather to work with the warmth of the timbers then freshen it up with a warm grey rug to zone the space.

I definitely think a lovely rug and a lighter couch would look better than the dark one. We personally had a light-coloured, leather couch when our kids were young and it wasn't a problem. (I've attached a pic of the exact one we had from Freedom Furniture.) We had it treated with a leather protector. The couch survived two messy, active toddlers just fine. Being leather, we just wiped the sticky fingermarks off. I even had to remove pen once 😆 - all worth it to have the look I wanted 👍
Alternatively have you considered a green tone? It would look quite nice with the wood accents in that room...
