Rust on i beams

Hi my house was built 12 years ago, l recently noticed some rust on my steel ibeams that support the house, l have some photos can you tell me how serious the rust problem might be, do you think its just surface rust that can be removed or more serious if its just surface rust , do l need to get it removed, what sort of cost is that for an average sized house, how is the rust removed

They grind off rust with a wire brush attachment on angle grinder. Check the moisture under the house. It should be dry under there. Need moisture for rust.
You can paint with a rust inhibiting paint if surface. Use wire brush to remove anything flaking.

Thanks can you tell how serious the problem is from the photos , is it just surface rust, how expensive is it to remove

Excuse my duh-ness but i'm having difficulty trying to follow whats going on here. Are these two photos an exact replica of your house and pool ? If not a hasty sketch with dimensions could help a lot. By kitchen wall do you mean the wall behind the bar ? And where is the pool wall ? Are you considering the covered area as being "inside" ? Sorry for all those questions lol Sometimes when you have a design problem you need to turn it inside out or on it's head. If you can't beat it maybe embrace it by making a feature of it : i.e. contrast by having the lightest colored pool surround and a great blue or tile inside and under the overhang, something that will echo the water color ? If you have a great covered area as in photo you'll most likely be spending a lot of time there and it could be soothing to be able to sometimes retire into a darker inside. In my book, 10M isn't small and also contrasting two floor colors doesn't necessarily make a space seem smaller and confined and may in fact even open it up. Could it be that you've thought yourself into a box here ? Sometimes one needs to give it all a good shake up and see how it resettles.

I love the general concept of beams and adding beams, but in this space with the ceiling as it is in the drawing, I think adding beams at lower levels makes things too busy architecturally, considering the soffitt and all of the other planes, angles, and openings.

My vote is for the wash but not in bright white and after some selective knot primer in the same tone. You are going to want to selectively primer down about 2/3 of the knots (use a dark white tinted primer), and use a dark white / brown toned off white instead of bright white so the beams still give you dark white on bright - that would be my vote. Consider something like bm stingray tinted primer and wash on the beams. You can add glaze for more working time or put down dropcloths and use water to cut it into a wash. Test it on some other raw wood that has had tannins develop for a few years. Then put it against your white wall - your husband will get the contrast and wood grain but you'll get the quiet palette you were hoping for. They both will have architectural depth and interest.

Impossible to tell structural from a picture but it doesn’t look that bad. If you’re worked have a professional out to look at it. It it was mine, I’d clean, coat it and monitor for further deterioration. Are you able to DIY the rust removal and a good coating with Kill Rust or similar? It will be expensive to get some one in as it’s a small space and confined work.

thanks l was worried they were not galvanised , can you tell if they were galvanised from the photos, l thought if they were galvanised there would be no rust at all

thankyou ,you mentioned they were reflecting light, l was shining a torch on the i beams when l took the photo if that makes a difference, its good to know the Support i-beams are galvanized, so you are very sure they are l l was worried they were not. Becasue the i beams are cold galvanized ( spay painted zinc? does that mean it would take decades for the rust to be a serious problem as they are only 12 years old

Hi my plan is to sand off the rust and then apply a rust killer/ converter to kill the rust and then paint over it, can anyone recommend the best brand of rust killer and then rust guard paint to use.
