New build. North facing deck. How hot does the composite board get (in Melbourne summer); how much does it expand? Is natural timber a better option? If so, which timber weathers better or is easier to keep looking nice? Thanks!!
In my experience it is too hot to walk on in bare feet in summer, hotter than timber but that can also be too hot. Grab a sample and test it out. We have some hot days at present.
Some suppliers have displays at their showrooms, some will mail you a sample that you can sit in the sun and do a scratch test. They are never going to look as good as real wood but the trade off is annual maintenance needs. Merbau is popular and hard wearing for decks, it can be a bit too red for me. If the budget allows look at Blackbutt but any hardwood will do the job.
We maintain our natural timber deck annually because we like the look. I understand that some timbers are relatively stable if allowed to weather to silver-grey, though some companies recommend occasional treatments even then.
