Brown Couch in Family Room
I have a brown couch in my family room and I think it makes our room look smaller and darker. Thinking about getting a light grey one instead. Before we go out and buy a new couch, I’m wondering if there’s anything else we can do (cover, pillows, blankets etc) that look very nice. We have new wood floors (French oak with a natural tone) being installed next week and would like something more modern.

Comments (93)Oh, okay, may need to clarify some more. If you get a new 2 seater in place of the 2 white chairs, fine, but no blue chair at all next to the 'new' 2 seater. Won't be right with a blue chair too. So what ones are you planning to recover?. If getting rid of part of it, not understanding. 2 different styles placed next to each other won't look right. I wouldn't like old blue fabrics next to new fabrics or next to 2 different styles of furniture. Comments (13)There is nothing worse than ceiling-mounted lights--harsh shadows, flat lighting. They are strictly for utility. I would put a large-ish, shallow cylindrical shade on them and put nothing more than a 15-watt bulb in them. Use them strictly for lighting your way as you walk through the room. I agree with Vincent; the chair in the corner doesn't fit at all, nor does the one under the A/C unit (put that one with its mate behind the love seat). And the curtains look smooshed. I think the problem with the bookcases is that they are uninteresting. Did you buy books-by-the-yard? What are all those identical books? They are visually uninteresting. I'd get rid of some of them and get some colorful ceramics/glass/photos. The room is absolutely overwhelmed with furniture. It needs one less love seat. Do you really need all of them? Pushing them against the walls/curtains so tightly just visually emphasizes the fact that there is too much furniture. I don't think a mirror above the fireplace will work. When people are sitting down (which is most of the time), all they will see is a reflection of the ceiling--the plain, white ceiling. Comments (0)Hi, We have recently renovated our kitchen, and have had the idea to turn our living room into a dining room. The idea is, that we would have some really comfy chairs and would be able to relax while sitting around the table; so the dining table wouldn't be only for meals. Then rather than having a dining table, we would have a bench with bar stools on the kitchen/living room wall. (nb the wall is load bearing and cannot easily be removed so this isn't an option). The other option is to keep the living room and set it up with a sofa, coffee table and a couple of occasional chairs. Dining wise we would have a smaller dining table in the kitchen. The living room opens on to the lounge which is set up as a TV room. There is also a guest bedroom and bathroom downstairs; the family bedrooms and bathroom is upstairs. We will also have an outdoor dining table in the undercover area outside the kitchen. I look forward to your thoughts and ideas....See Morejyyanks
4 months agolast modified: 4 months agoIf you want to keep the couch, you can pair with a modern area rug and coordination non-brown pillows and artwork.
I vote to change the couch to a different color but the color would depend on the tone of your wood and walls. Is it warm or cool? Gray is generally more cool while your walls look warm which would only work if you tie it together with a rug that has both in it like this one.

4 months agolast modified: 4 months agoIf the sofas are still in good condition I would keep them for a while longer, specially as it looks like you still have young kids. Once the new floors go in, I would look for a bright/light/eclectic area rug to give the room some life.

26 days agoOnce the floors are in, you should be able to get a better idea of it the brown couches with work in the space. Have you looked at repainting the room another color? Maybe try adding a rug with an accent color that would go with brown? You could easily add white or cream pillows and blankets to the couch along with a light colored rug.
