Affordable window coverings for first home buyer

Hi everyone, I need some advice on window coverings for my daughter’s first apartment in Sydney please. The quote she received for blinds from the developers’s supplier is $11500, which is way beyond her budget. Please see attached floor plan that shows the quote detail. She’s looking for affordable options like sheers and curtains, especially with blockout capability for the bedroom. She isn’t keen on roller blinds. Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

I’ve used iseekblinds and diy blinds. Both will send samples. Both have online quotes available on their website. Spotlight have a good range but I think their quality has dropped off a bit but you can check them in store and see what you think.

My first suggestion, if on a budget would be Spotlight. Freedom and Kmart also have a good range. Purchase curtains, tracks and accessories and install yourself. If your daughter does not have access to a DIY installation then it is going to cost extra. Why is there a quote on blinds if your daughter does not want them?
Also if the the windows are not standard heights for off the shelf curtains, then it is going to be more expensive as well. This might be a good project for learning to sew and making your own curtains or adding a beautiful fabric to off the shelf curtains to required length. But if that is not possible, then it will be more expensive.

It's refreshing to see nautical, navy BLUE. Everyone is saying the same thing for the most part - just introduce another color, definitely bright (yellow or orange IMO) and it will make it more current. What I really like is how your style will withstand the test of time - and with minor updates now and then it will always look fresh and "current".

Hi Geonin, the first thing that I would do is go through your house and de-clutter everything then ensure that everything is spotless and in good condition (pay special attention to the things that you know buyers will look at and things that are touched/handled every day as well as things like appliances and doors - make sure that nothing screams "repair bill"). The second thing to think about is paint and flooring - if your carpet is in good condition have it cleaned otherwise think about replacing it (expensive but poor carpet is seen as a big expense to buyers - particularly if its their first property). Paint your walls a colour that is as light as you can to make your property bigger but remember to tone it in with the carpet and keep your trims neutral (white/black) that will compliment your walls and carpet. Remember lighting and soft furnishings can change the whole look of your home too. During the open house/inspection phase - touches of home will help: smells like fresh perked coffee or baking are always inviting (you can boil some water with a stick of cinnamon and orange slices - just hide the evidence before you leave the house); if your inspections are late in the afternoon, turn on table and floor lamps inside and outdoor lights that'll add warmth.

There is no common link, no continuity that each dwelling share. i would introduce an element to both structures, borrowed fm the other, so for example the red brick and windows are the most striking design elements in the house, however the rendered garage with a parapet and no visible roof may as well be from another planet, I would brick up the front piers aside the door, with matching red brick, and then I'd install some post and beam rafters that could extend over beyond the garage door, almost like a flat eave, however just beams, no roof, and paint it chacoal, I'd then link a path from th garage to the house, and create the same detail at the porch entry of the home, same beams, colour and materials, so it looks like they belong on the same property. also, perhaps a little scary to consider, i would render the wall in between the door and the first window only, and paint the front door in the matching blue. Windows I'd go charcoal as per th beam structure, and apply a stained timber batten to the flat parapet above the garage, so paint that black, then fix timber battens vertically wh enough spacing to see that black shadowline, it will modernise it, emphasising the elongated design, which is both contemporary and popular, and tie this timber detail into the house with a generous deck. Both timbers will link, over scale th deck, perhaps stagger a step or two, as the garage is over scaled also. remove the fence, and landscape the corner with over scaled shrubbery, a meandering path to help invite ppl between the two structures., the visual disconnection is the fence, but it translates into everything else. if a fence must be, then consider a half height one, or an informal row of sleepers as uprights, to softly define the yard.

Clear any shrubs / trees / weeds, away from around the house - not saying go out with a chainsaw and slash everything down to the ground but make sure there is nothing higher than the window frames directly around the house or even leaning on the house. Taller tree's may be able to be pruned to allow more light through e.g. lift the bottom of the growth up higher by removing lower branches or thin out branches from within the canopy. Bring in as much sun as you can during the day. If you are planting a new garden, always look at the height of the tree's when they mature and if possible mix some trees that lose their leaves in winter so you obtain maximum sun. Check your insulation e.g. last year I added a new layer of insulation onto of my existing ceiling insulation. If you have dampness under your house maybe look at channelling water away from the house with what ever means you can afford e.g. professional drains right around the house or just dig trenches. You may wish / need to add black plastic over any clay / ground under your house if you are not on a flat concrete block based house. Open curtains during the day. Dress to the conditions. If you can't afford to heat the entire house just heat the room(s) you are using but make sure the non heated rooms get ventilation from time to time (especially lovely sunny days). Pile the blankets on the bed and even use a blanket over your legs if you are sitting watching TV or working on your computer. Think SUN SUN SUN. If you are renting and the house you are in gets very little sun, now is the time to start looking for something that gets more sun. Winter is the best time to look.

Thanks Dreamer for your response. The company provided quotes for the whole new apartment complex. They want as many apartments as possible to have the same blinds so that the exterior of the building looks uniform. They are also strict about the colour facing outside the building. It has to be white or off-white.

Well then…go with the blinds that are apparently compulsory, and buy off the shelf sheer or blockout curtains to cover the blinds.

See if you can get a sample or a colour off the developer’s supplier. All blind suppliers will have a white or off-white.

I have bought a lot of curtains and blinds from Tuiss Online Blinds. You get an instant quote online, can order samples and quality is great. They have regular sales eg Easter sale is an extra 15% off everything and extended for an additional day. They have videos to show you how to measure and install.

I've also had excellent service from Dollar Curtains and Blinds and got some linen look sheers for a great price.

11500 sounds high end. But it depends on how they need to be fixed.
