Front retaining wall issues

last year

Have had retaining walls done, looking at best way to get the best out of them. Esp where steps don't match up to concrete pathway. Smaller side doesn't have a finishing wall. All ideas welcomed

What is the first wall retiaining? The one at house I assume will be backfilled to make garden bed level with house. Grow planting in bed and in front of wall.

The first wall has a septic system which we need to be accessible but sort of hidden. The house 1 should be easier enough but just trying to landscape the step upto the pathway

Thanks for all the great ideas everyone and sorry I didn't explain the polycarbonate a bit better :) This is along the lines of what we'll be using... http://www.psp.co.nz/building-brands/corrugated-sheeting/suntuf-polycarbonate The area is an absolute sun trap and we're hoping to use it as an extension to our living space, especially on rainy days! I've just sent my husband out to get a few pots of different stains for is to try - darkest brown (cedar) and a lighter brown (rustic oak) both by Cabots + the black we already have. Hopefully we can decide between one of those! I probably should have mentioned we will have black aluminium pool fencing running along the top of the second retaining wall - so the real question is do we keep everything black (pool fencing, horizontal fence, retaining walls and pergola) or do we go with a dark (or even light) brown for the pergola and retaining walls.... We just keep going around in circles at the moment. Decisions, decisions! Thanks again :)

Moss. Preferably the thick dense dark green kind of moss that looks like a carpet that grows on the north side of embankments where little sun reaches. How close is your nearest state or national forest or, in the alternative, the nearest dirt road with an embankment that gets little if any sun because of shade trees. Take a drive and/or walk and see what kinds of moss you can find and take some pics. A dozen or so pieces would likely be all you need to get it started because, with the right conditions -- shade and moisture -- it spreads. (Ferns like shade but usually do better with drainage. Moss likes damp but will not grow in a puddle.) Where you have windows, you could create a "view" : With a concrete planter (or on concrete pavers set a large clay planter) with a trellis with English ivy. Alternately, you could buy your own pieces of exterior grade plywood and use deck screws to affix them to the fence posts and horizontal supports of the fence and decorate them w/paint and/or planters and/or metal sculpted art --- get creative.

we are installing french doors to replace the bay window, my issue now is how do we add a deck as it's quite an awkward space with that concrete retaining wall and raised lawn. The lawn/retaining wall is about 1 to 2 inches above the floor level where the bottom of the doorway will be. the wall of the conservatory will be removed, inside is already decking so the idea was to wrap it around the house

why build steps that will cover the lovely sandstone wall, I would use plants and gravel.

Hello Rick, personally I would not have put steps in, they don't really seem to serve a purpose. Instead I would have filled this space with soil to 120mm below the level of the sloping concrete drive, then topped with a Redwood Bark ground cover and planted this area out with small hedging plants like English Box, Euonymus Japonicus or a fine leaf Golden Diosma where over time prune these into a low square hedge.

Alternatively, if steps are definitely needed I would have dug out all the way to the corner and then used the same Sandstone material for the steps.
