Family Room color and accessory update needed

Any ideas for lightening up our family room? Sofas are beige. The colors on the chairs are navy, milk chocolate, light blue, slate blue. The stone wall is beiges, tans and grays. The trim and built-ins are white, and the floor looks more red in the photo than it really is. I'd love suggestions for rug (size and color), window treatments (need to allow light in), and accessories (the sofa pillows you see are going away). I worry that even a large ottoman-table won't be large enough for the room- there's about 9 feet between the sofas - but I also don't want a big heavy piece of furniture in the center of the room weighing it down. Thanks for your ideas!

10 years agoHi there! You have a warm and cozy family room there! Your fireplace is definitely the focal point of the room, so your wall colors could maybe be more neutral so that they do not take away from the beautiful colors of the stone.
Since you have established your color scheme with your arm chairs, I would subtly use red/white/blue/taupe in your rug, curtains and pillows. If you are looking to let more light in, I wonder of the blind could be removed and replaced with linen panels. These should give you enough privacy at night, and of course be left completely open during the day.
You said you have 9' between the sofas, which makes me think your room is 16' wide? Or, 14' to the front of the bookcase? I think you should be able to scoot the window sofa forward about two feet without throwing things off balance. This reduces the distance between sofas to 8'. With a 42" round coffee table in between, and about 18" to 20" on each side of the coffee table for leg room, you should then have a comfortable seating arrangement.
Your two arm chairs could be pushed close together, so that they have only about 4 - 6" between them. If they are set back just enough that you can still get I to the seating area, you should have a nice, cozy arrangement. A set of nesting tables at the end of the window sofa gives you the flexibility to move them to where they are needed when you are entertaining.
I did a pic collage showing how you could lighten up the room. I used Sherwin-Williams Kilim Beige as your wall color -'the swatch is in the middle of the collage. The round coffee table is from Anthropologie. The nesting tables are from Crate and Barrel. The denim weave rug is from Dash & Albert. The pillows offer pops of red, as well as texture.
I hope you find some inspiration in this collage - there are certainly lots of other ways to go too! Oh, and I added a couple more rugs, also from Dash & Albert, that might work.

Comments (12)What a fantastic architecture. When you do the brick, if you stain it with masonry /concrete stain you won't have the same issues of maintenance as with paint. They will spray it evenly - through you will have to select a deeper color - either taupe (brown-gray) or a straight charcoal. Love your windows and the classic angled railing. I think a dark gray on the siding will make the orange brick jump even more. What bothers me is the white (railing, fascia, eaves) juxtaposed with the earth toned stuff. So I would recommend camel tones - for the siding - something like http://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/color/find-and-explore-colors/paint-colors-by-family/SW6108-latte/ and the hopsack next darker tone for the garage door. If you think you will stain your brick charcoal, then the white eaves and trim are probably right, and you may not want to paint it tan now and then go back. If your brick were charcoal, then I would block out the rest in grays and blue grays - leave the white eaves, but take the railing and posts charcoal too. Comments (9)I would use a bookcase unit with closed doors on the lower half and not too high. Wide and low maybe. Closed lower cabinets are great for toys, games and will not clutter. Open shelves tend to get cluttered after a while. When displaying books, use in stacks standing and lying down. Open space between groupings, not all lined up in rows. Add some decor items sprinkled among the books to give the eye a visual break. I would choose a horizontal art piece for the chair wall. Comments (8)Despite previous opinions I have to say this - DON'T GET DOWN LIGHTS!!!! We had them in our previous home. They were constantly blowing no matter what kind of bulb used. The casings kept breaking. This meant we couldn't just change the bulb ourselves. It drove me mental. They spotlight certain parts of a room instead of lighting the whole room so when one of our main "culprits" kept blowing in the kitchen, I had no lighting above that bench until we could get an electrician in.
