Thank you so much for your comment after all this time. The colour you have suggested brightens the front door area beautifully and if the two red pots were painted in a tone to match, we think it would look great. Not sure if you can get Crestview doors in New Zealand but there must be something similar. We like the idea of going away from another cedar door - mainly because it would stand out too much while it was weathering. I don't know whether we would have been that brave but the tangerine works so well with the jade green of the joinery. I have re-laid all the stones and put a new wider front step in. The timber colour will soften down in time. I put a big pot in the garden to draw visitors to the front door and have added some colourful bromeliads to the garden alongside the house to make the area a bit more cheerful. We can't make a decision about what to do with a larger 'overhang' to protect the front porch yet - it is a project in progress. Thanks again for your post.

As hatetoshop suggests, paint the front doors in both entryways. Here are examples of some blue doors that look good with tan siding. Agree that it's worth enclosing your garbage cans somehow in your other entrance. Replace your entry light fixture with something modern along the lines of the light shown below. Find a nice large indoor/outdoor rug mats that coordinate with the painted doors--tan and blue for both entryways. Try Overstock.com Get some big pots in the door color and coordinating colors and line the entryway fence with some tall plants suitable for your climate to break up the wall of white. Can't tell if you've got any soil in front of the wall where you could put in some plants instead. Inside your fence, clean up the yard then plan some landscaping. So that you have something nice to look at from your kitchen, hang some plants in colorful containers from the fence. If you really want to get fancy, paint some simple wooden window boxes in the blue door color, hang them across the kitchen window, and fill them with herbs and/or flowers if you get enough sun. Or do the same with large planters below your kitchen windows. Put a small colorful bistro table and chairs back there.

Are you standing in a rowboat when taking the picture? Lots of humidity, I guess. Try this in your minds eye: A tall shrub at each deck column below, so the wheelbarrow and dogs and kids can still go beddiebye between them, and continue along the foundation walls as well. You can mix the different plants, but if you choose to, I would suggest 3-5 of the same before introducing another. The lilac, of course, will be the most fragrant; and the shadblow the earliest to bloom. Lilac (Syringa), Shadblow (Amelanchier), Crape Myrtle (be careful when selecting these just by color, as some have a mature height of 2' and others have a mature height of 20') and the Crape Myrtle do not do well up north, if you are on the coast of Maine. Underplant these beauties with groundcover (a flagstone path for the wheelbarrow access) and low flowering shrubs or tall grasses will add nice color and texture for all the passing boatmen to view and smile and wave to you ON DECK above. Ask at the auto supply store if there is a product to wipe onto your railing to prevent fogging of your "wind shield". Moss. Preferably the thick dense dark green kind of moss that looks like a carpet that grows on the north side of embankments where little sun reaches. How close is your nearest state or national forest or, in the alternative, the nearest dirt road with an embankment that gets little if any sun because of shade trees. Take a drive and/or walk and see what kinds of moss you can find and take some pics. A dozen or so pieces would likely be all you need to get it started because, with the right conditions -- shade and moisture -- it spreads. (Ferns like shade but usually do better with drainage. Moss likes damp but will not grow in a puddle.) Where you have windows, you could create a "view" : With a concrete planter (or on concrete pavers set a large clay planter) with a trellis with English ivy. Alternately, you could buy your own pieces of exterior grade plywood and use deck screws to affix them to the fence posts and horizontal supports of the fence and decorate them w/paint and/or planters and/or metal sculpted art --- get creative.
