Before & After: A Blissful White Coastal Kitchen With Contrast
Coastal but sophisticated? Cool and airy but light and welcoming? This kitchen ticks all the boxes and more
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
Brief
A fresh new kitchen design. Although we modernised the house and gave it an ‘elevated coastal’ feel, I wanted to honour its era as well.

The house is an early ’80s build and had some amazing features, windows, arches and the most unique pendants, which were in need of proper restoration. We restored and repurposed them in the entry (pictured).

Starting point
In all honesty, the client has always loved previous projects of mine.
The windows were original to the house and were located in another room, so we moved them from and placed them here where they can be marvelled at.
The client wanted an ‘elevated coastal’ feel in terms of style.

What challenges did you work around?
This project started during 2020 when we were in our second lockdown and my client was living overseas. It was a real challenge and starting this project was hard as we had to push it forward a number of times.
Also, a shortage of materials was trying, plus constantly worrying about trades people getting sick. The relief when this home was finished was incredible.

Why do you think this room works?
The original floor plan was quite disjointed, the kitchen was tucked away, the third bedroom was next to the living room and the whole space didn’t work. We opened the kitchen to look into the dining and living room and we created the third bedroom where the kitchen was originally.
The client was happy with the new cohesive flow of the open-plan space. She was so happy that we met and exceeded the brief and provided the space with both the aesthetic she wanted and lots of natural sunlight.
