Before & After: From Dark Cave to Light Contemporary Laundry
See how an interior designer transformed a dark timber laundry into a contemporary green farmhouse-style delight
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.

Did you find your client on Houzz?
Yes, my client was transferred to me through a Concierge phone call [now called Houzz Live Connections. Live Connections is a free service where a homeowner fills in an online questionnaire about their potential project. A Houzz Live Connections rep then arranges a phone call to talk about what kind of project the homeowner is planning and what sort of professional help they need. Once that’s established, the Live Connections rep finds suitable local professionals on Houzz and sounds them out about whether they’d be a good fit, before introducing the best-matched ones to the homeowner}.
My client initially wanted just the laundry updated but we ended up doing the kitchen, custom cabinetry and paint throughout, new furniture and curtains. It was a big job in the end.

Brief
Our client wanted a bright and airy laundry space that she could dry all her clothes in.
She also wanted a modern-farmhouse style with lots of green tones to bring in the feeling of nature and the outdoors. We had to incorporate a mudroom and storage for the family’s shoes in this space as well.

Starting point
We added a new window into the space to let the light in. We also found a great feature floor tile that the client loved and worked from there. Custom drying racks were designed and incorporated into the linen cupboard and we introduced a subtle farmhouse feel.

Key design aspects
Colour palette:
The window needed to be positioned to make the most of the overhead cabinetry and to consider the view out to the trees in the backyard.
Colour palette:
- Green, introduced by Dulux Willow Leaf on the two-pack polyurethane joinery.
- Matt pressed-edge green glazed porcelain Four Faces 200 x 200-centimetre floor tiles from Nerang Tiles.

What challenges did you have to work around?
We had an existing downpipe that was blocked into the wall, so we decided to pull the walls forward to disguise this but kept the lower cabinetry full depth to make the most of the storage space.
Why do you think this room now works?
This room is now filled with so much light and character for the family. They can wash their dog in the oversize farmhouse sink, have a place to store the boys’ school bags, hats and shoes, and there are optimum hanging racks around the room to dry all their clothes indoors. It’s now a room they can enjoy!
