Room of the Week: A Funky Kitchen for a Young Family
A funky and functional kitchen for a young family is enhanced by a beautiful pendant light and well-chosen artwork
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
Brief: Functionality and continuity with the other spaces were important to the couple. They also loved natural materials that projected a warm feeling into the space. Most of all they were after a look that would not date, and could withstand the day-to-day movements of a young family.
Starting point: The family wanted a neutral space that could evolve over time with new added accent pieces such as a feature pendant and artworks or other collectables that would reflect the growth and story of the family.
Key Design Aspects
Colour palette: Cool colour palette
Materials palette: Cabinetry in Laminex ‘Polar White’ Laminate Silk, benchtop in Caesarstone ‘Organic White’
Key pieces of furniture/fittings: The feature light is Alex Earl’s Anise pendant and the artwork is by Michael Muir. The stools are by Quazi Design.

Why do you think this room works: The space reflects the personality and lifestyle of the family. It is the heart of the house, where the living happens.
