Room of the Week: A Hamptons-Style Nursery in Navy
Often one key idea leads to decor success. Here, grasscloth wallpaper and wainscoting team up for a handsome nursery
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
Brief
My client loves classic Hamptons style and isn’t afraid of going bold and dark. We reused the family’s existing cot, change table and chair, which we had used in their elder son’s nursery, and that gave us a great base to work with. I was given a blank canvas and was able to work with the client to create a pretty special space. This was the third time I’ve worked with this client, so I knew her taste and style.

Starting point
The design clicked into place when we decided to combine the navy grasscloth wallpaper with the wainscoting. We had gone through a few different ideas first, but once we worked this base out we knew it would look amazing.

Materials palette
This room has lots of texture running through it; from the grasscloth wallpaper to the braided wool rug, plus touches of velvet, leather and timber.

Here’s a copy of the moodboard drawn up for the space.
Key pieces of furniture
The chair is a Nursery Works Empire Rocker. The Sparrow Cot is from Oeuf. The wallpaper is from Boyd Blue, the rug from Armadillo&Co, and the lovely print is from Designer Boys.

Thinking behind the arrangement of furniture
I always start with the location of the cot for nurseries; this one had to be the feature in the room, with the beautiful whale print above it.

Challenges worked around
The room was a little difficult to work around as it has three doors (entry door, walk-in wardrobe door and ensuite door) so we had to make sure that the space was workable around that (and it’s a big room, which doesn’t always make furniture placement easier). We then had custom shelving/a daybed made for the corner of the room.

Why do you think this room works
The room works because it creates such an impact with the dramatic use of the wallpaper. It’s bold but not over the top. It’s classic and luxurious.
